Deer in heavy winds??
« on: October 23, 2022, 09:30:36 AM »
Hey y’all. I’m trying like CRAZY to break my blacktail drought. I’ve got Monday/Tuesday to hunt modern rifle this coming week and it’s supposed to be pretty windy, rainy and stormy on Monday. Just curious, what’s y’all’s experience hunting blacktails in windy weather? I’ve got a tree farm permit and will be out from dark to dark both days and curious where you would concentrate your efforts on the windy days for these guys? Clear-cuts, thicker reprod or the timber? Just want to maximize my efforts ya know? Thanks to all the deer masters on here!!

I e done my best with black tail on the windiest and rainiest days - all in clear cuts. Seems like they do not like being in the timber in those conditions- atleast 1/2 of them were bedded down

I would definitely be out in the windy rainy weather. It’s the best hunting for blacktail there is. Clear-cut versus big timber I guess depends on what you prefer to hunt and what the deer populations like. You obviously have to be where the deer are, If there’s good deer sign in the clear cuts , Sit and glass those. If you’re the type of guy that likes to Keep moving, I would work the timber.

Reprod on the edge of timber.

I've had good luck with the lee side of small ridges, cut banks etc. in clearcuts on days like that. I'll never forget driving around looking for blacktail one time when it was blowing a constant 30-40. It got to the point where we were calling out spots where we were going to spot a deer and bam, there would be one laying there. Seemed like they were all out of the timber and any little fold or draw out of the wind was holding them. One of the best days I've ever had finding blacktail. Unfortunately it was just before or just after season, don't recall which.

Glass any wind breaks you can find in open terrain like steep banks, big logs, timber edges. I spot more bedded deer on days like your describing. Just think of spots you would hunker down in if you had to be out there.

Thanks for all the great info guys! I saw a ton of deer out and about and was totally surprised! I didn’t find any legal bucks to shoot at, but had a blast seeing so many deer in one day. I think I saw 9 deer in total for the day and one small spike buck with only one antler on his drivers side. (I was hunting a 2pt min area).
