Klickitat Turkey Numbers Down??
« on: May 09, 2023, 07:47:25 AM »
Howdy folks - was curious to all you Klickitat county turkey hunters out there what you were seeing for bird numbers this year? I've gone out 4 times now and hit all my usual spots that typically hold birds and one thing that i'm noticing is simply the density of birds is just not what it typically is. I've chatted with numerous other hunters and even some land owners in the area all saying the same thing. Bird numbers at least compared to the last two years are way way down. I'm thinking the rough winter we had put the hurt on some of them this year.

Wondered if anyone else was noticing the same thing?

Saw waaay more birds there this year and heard more gobbles than my previous three years combined.

I know that in the areas of Steven's County that I usually hunt. There are less than 1/3 the amount of birds as usual.

I agree
I mean yes there are lots of birds.
But every year seems just a bit harder to find mature toms.
If I had to guess as turkey hunting becomes more popular, turkey density will be effected.
But I'd have to look at harvest numbers to confirm.
In stevens county.

It's not a bird issue it's less and less public land to issue. Less areas to hunt and most of the birds are on or near private land. With that went up one day and seen 7 toms. Birds everywhere.

I've been in klickitat area for a couple days hunting and haven't seen any birds, but its my first time with turkeys.  Glad to hear from others that there are birds here, was starting to wonder, lol...  I guess I'm not in very good spots as I haven't seen anyone else hunting.  Even went out to Glenwood area today, got up about 3000 feet near a burn area - saw tons of deer and some elk, but no birds.  Headed back home tomorrow, will try again next year - I did learn the general area pretty well so that's good.

It sure seems like there’s plenty in the high prairie areas.

Seems business as usual to me over in Gdale.

A four month either sex fall season probably doesn’t help.
