What is the price per pound for a steer
« on: July 31, 2023, 09:04:58 AM »
I've got an angus cross steer I'm selling to a friend.  Hanging weight 790 and grained.  What is the going price per pound?

I can post what Toppenish Livestock sold on Thursday.  These are live weight prices and if it says $100 or $105 that really means $1.00/pound or $1.05/pound.  These are mostly dairy cull cow prices on the hoof.  If you have hanging weight I'd double the price, plus your butcher fee then add the premium for a good steer vs an old dairy cow.  .02

713 slaughter cows/bulls sold, market got a little stronger today…
Very best heavy hol cows $110-115, premiums to $122
Most good hol cows $100-109
Better lean/thin cows $95-105
Better jers cows $88-97
Better larger hol fdr hfrs $135-149

I am hoping to sell 15-20 grain fattened steers this year.  We sell half for $4 and whole for $3.5.  Ours usually hang around 800lbs also.  For friends maybe a little cheaper?

Could you message me with details? We have been doing the grass fed thing for a couple years now and decided we are ready for a little more marbling😄

I'd just add that day old dairy/beef cross calves are $400-500 at day old.

This only happens when the growers can contract way out in advance meaning that high beef prices are here for awhile.  I'd recommend having your freezers full sooner than later.

If this's the going rate wow. Back in the day I could get them for 25 - 40 at the Dairys.

Yeah it’s crazy what they go for now. I remember hanging around to the end of the sale and you could  pick up the scrawny ones nobody wanted for five dollars apiece. me and my brothers paid for our first vehicles raising those cheap bottle calves.

4-500 for a day old seems insane, paid double that for an 1100lb steer

I'm pretty sure the OP isn't talking about some scraggly dairy bull at the sale barn.  An apprx 800  pound hanging carcass is a good 1400+ pound fed beef, obviously ready for slaughter.

maybe, or its just that overpriced.  Some people are overcharging.    Definitely shop around.

I think the OP was just asking what he should charge....maybe I’m not reading it right.
We haven’t seen nothing yet on high beef prices.  Feedlot are buying 4,5, and 6 weight calves for over $3/lb on the hoof.  Thinking of weaning mine early and sending them to the sale....
Inflation sucks, but sometimes folks forget to extend grace to the farmer and rancher when they are forced to feed their family and raise prices.
