Bearpaw Season - Fall 2023

Watched two small bucks rubbing two mornings ago, one was using a small fir tree, the other yearling buck was rubbing on a big mullen plant, I never seen that before, I guess he'll move up to using a tree next year!

I've watched the little guys rub the mullen, kind of goofy looking.

We only had two Washington bear hunters this year, both of them filled their tags on the third morning of their hunt. Ty pulled the trigger on his 6’8” blackie first thing in the morning with guide Ray. The boar went a short distance and they heard him expire.

Meanwhile Sherman was hunting with guide Zach, they had been hunting for a big boar with impressive feet and a Boone and Crocket pooper, they had also seen a smaller bear. Shortly after Ty got his bear Sherman made good on his chance at the B&C pooper, he dropped him and they watched the big bear tumble about 30 yards.

The bear was in a deep canyon, they had to skin and piece the bear up to get him out, great job by both hunters and their guides!

Guide Derek showing off an archery pronghorn with 6” cutters and a little over 15” that was taken yesterday on one of our ranches in Montana, it green scored a fraction over 80”.

This morning on the first morning of archery elk hunting one of our hunters arrowed a bull, but hit too high, I think the bull was closer than he thought, not much blood, we waited a long while to track but the blood trail ended quickly, I think he was hit in that no-kill zone just below the spine. He was with a larger bull, so hoping we see them again this evening, fingers crossed.

Archery Elk Hunt Day 2
Group of three elk called in and a 20ish yard miss yesterday, then a bunch of target practicing done mid day so that hopefully the next opportunity results in a kill. One hunter's bow blew up the first day, so he spent most of yesterday trying to find a place to get his bow fixed. We had another hunter within 20-30 yards of a bull, he could see the cows but couldn't get a shot at the bull, just the way it goes so often when bow hunting.

Even though elk aren't talking a lot and a lot of the bulls are still in bachelor groups we've had pretty good luck at getting into elk. We've spotted a couple big bulls too, but they won't play ball yet and we've been unable to stalk in on them. Last night a group of five bulls were spotted just before dark, one of them a 5x5, the others all smaller rags and spikes, they are after those bulls this morning. With cooler weather I keep expecting the rut to heat up but the elk haven't really started talking a lot yet in our hunting areas.

Roger who is hunting with guide Zach put an arrow in the right spot on a 4x4 whitetail, not a big buck, but Roger's best archery buck to date, congrats Roger!

Another hunter hunting with guide Brian drilled a 6’6” bear last night, no photos yet of the bear.

Good looking bears there!  That antelope is a dang nice one for archery too!
