Sekiu boat accident in fog yesterday
« on: August 21, 2025, 08:23:05 AM »
Was reading of an Arima run over by another boat in the fog from Sekiu. Clearly lack of radar and running in fog blind. Be careful out there! All survived from reports. there are laws and marine rules....

no radar is sketchy right to start with but many dont realize there are "Law for safe speed in the Rules of the Nautical road" .

i cant count the times i have been stationary off shore and hear a boat steaming and watch them last minute turn away! pretty sketchy!!!

Looks like that was a nice boat, too bad.  Glad that everyone survived.

I added AIS to my boat, but that only shows the bigger boats that are transmitting.  I was on a charter out of Deep Creek and the guide almost ran over a boat anchored not too far offshore fishing.

It's spooky stuff for sure.

The guide boats leaving sekui in the fog run at terrifying speeds dodging boats. Even wirh radar a low profile boat doesnt have much of a radar reflecting signature. Its made me consider a radar reflector on my boat which isn't small.

Long time boater here.  I have radar, but when in poor visibility I still adhere to "no faster than I'm willing to hit something".

Glad all souls were safe.

Even with radar I would not be comfortable going on step in the fog. Never know when a crazy kayak guy may be offshore.

I wouldn't expect everyone to have radar, but I would expect everyone to operate in the fog more slowly.

Do small craft use fog horns? Every time I’ve been at sea on the aircraft carriers and we were in fog banks they used them.

its quite troubling in the fog... watching my radar as a "boat without" runs at speed directly at me... pretty dangerous to not have it and then double down with running... these people are "going fishing 20 miles that way" no way they are idling or going slow to get there... so you are in direct danger from others poor decisions... kind of like having headlights out and driving home in the dark..... i have mine on but.....

This thread reminds me of one of the times Lake Washington opened for Salmon. BIL and I decided it would be of interest and took my 16'. I figured it would be hard to find a parking spot so my wife came with us at 3:00 AM to drive the rig home and come get us when we were done. We figured that would be early enough to have a shorter line. We were wrong. The line was LOOOOOOOONG at Gene Coulon.
Once we were on the water (still dark) and lights on we motored slowly toward where we wanted to fish. There were big boats, small boats, many with NO LIGHTS, and people driving like idiots. It was INSANE. Once it got light there were so many boats you could almost step from one to another. Boats running into each other, people yelling. It was crazy.
You could see the path where the fish were by the wave of poles hooking fish. We got our two, but one was because we snagged a broken off line and there was a fish on the end when we got it reeled in!
Never again.
I have been fishing the bay by Westport and have had fog roll in fast and thick to where you can't see. I can imagine how scary having someone 'in a hurry' relying solely on radar running up on or over would be. For that matter, I have had them do it in the daylight!

IIRC, they're supposed to.  Some specified interval.  Never heard a private boater emitting one though.
