Blue Tongue and EHD outbreak in NE Washington

My father in law is in town visiting us from Alaska in St. Maries right now. I took him out last night to show him a few animals and we literally only saw half a dozen doe. Normally in my area you would see well over a hundred animals. There was a few spots you could just smell death along the route I took. Its abosultely crazy how hard it is hitting certain areas.

Hit the Palouse hard.  Buddy called and said all the white tails are dead on his place.  Dad said he found all big bucks dead that were in his hay fields.   Bummer.  I haven’t killed one since 2019 and this was gonna be the year.

Horrible to hear. Got buddies in that neck of turf that are seeing the same. They found a dandy 5 by 5 belly up in a plow row a couple days ago.

In 117, we are also seeing dead deer.

Starting to find them in 142 now found 5 this weekend

It was that bad of a drought over there this year? Crazy. Maybe it will kill the CWD deer as well.

The last outbreak of EHD I was able to get up on Mt Spokane and kill a little WT meat buck.  The Palouse that year was devastated.  Here's to hoping a little rain and cooler temps kills the bugs.  I'm heading for the hills again come November.

I bet the mountain bucks are doing a little better because of the lack of “congestion” and possibly cooler temps and less bugs

I think that was the case last time and it appears to be the case this time, I think these blue tongue outbreaks impact a greater percentage of lowland deer.

Seeing the fewest deer, elk, and moose on my property in 105 than I have in the 8 years I have owned it.  Nothing bigger than a 3pt WT.  Fawns can be counted on half a hand.  Often see a large cougar I would like an opportunity on.  Next trip I'll just concentrate on a packrat setting up an estate in the old storage cabin.
