2018 Honda CRV Bad head gasket
« on: February 04, 2026, 06:42:11 PM »
My sister has a 2018 Honda CRV that she just took to the Honda dealership.  It has a blown head gasket. From what she is describing to me about symptoms I dont doubt the diagnosis. Its Just shy of 200,000 miles. Honda quoted her $8000 on the high side for the repair. I'm thinking that there is no way I would put that kind of money into that engine with those miles. I told her to talk to a local shop and see what he says.

My other thought is a used Japanese engine or low mileage engine out of a wrecking yard. Looking Like about $1600 for one of those options with 40,000-50,000 miles.

I know JDM is pretty well known for selling used engines. Have any of you used them or one of the other Japanese used engine dealers to get a used motor. I dont know what the R&R time on a CRV engine is but it would seem to me that she could go that route and have a local mechanic do the work and probably be into it for half or so of her quote. Wondering what your thoughts are? Any idea on R&R time?

Appreciate any info you may have to share including other used engine dealers.

Thanks,
HntnFsh

Just did a Vin search. Looks like it has the turbocharged 1.5l engine so those seem to be running about $2300

Never replaced an engine......put 250,000 miles on a Datsun 710, 150,000 on a Ford Festiva and 200,000 on an F-150 (so far). I kept the Datsun going by pouring Silver Seal into the radiator.......then I had bigger leak coming through the head gasket......put in a tube of some 3M or other brand of a fibrous leak plug product (yellow tube) and it never leaked again. Try a cheap fix first.

I've used JDM before with good results.
I've also used B and R Auto wrecking with good results ..If you can find an A or B rated motor in WA or Oregon you'll probably be in that 2400-2500 range. They are easy to work with.
You'd have to get the factory install time for an estimate on install unless you get a good mechanic that just charges the actual time they spend...not what the book says.

What's book on the car in good condition....maybe 6-8k ?..

Long block time is 17 hours and the engine comes out the bottom.  :twocents:
Head gasket time is almost 16hrs...

Might check with Twisted wrenches there on hwy12.  I had some work done there.  Clutch and all that  plus ujoints because the had to drop the drive line.  Was just under $2000.  Ford wanted $7000 to do the same stuff.

She just got a call back from the dealership. They said they made a mistake. It would be 4 grand.
We decided it would just be easiest to have them fix it. Then she'll trade it in on a new rig of some sort

Nothing like a $4000 mistake. :dunno: :chuckle:
