tuna fish
« on: July 10, 2009, 03:31:45 PM »
If your coming down to westport to fish bring some tuna jigs along. The tuna really showed up the last few days one charter boat had 275 by 10 yesterday and the trollers are coming in full. The best fishing is 50 miles out between westport and the willipa but there were fish all the way in to 25 miles. We are going out monday but lot of boats heading out in the morning. Nice ocean but the fog is starting to roll in now.

That just reminded me of when I was a kid.  My grandpa (big fisherman RIP)  had us come to his house and can fresh tuna.  To this day I don't think I have had better.  Okay get your minds out of the gutter.  Tuna fish, fish.   ;)

So when can I go to Westport and buy fresh tuna off the boats?  I wanna can probably around 75 - 100 pounds of it this year.

What does it or can I expect it to run this year per pound?

I was thinking the same thing? I got tuna loin for 2 bucks a pound a couple years ago out there   I have seen it go for as high as 5  :dunno: but remember I only buy the loin.

I never heard of this before and I am kinda interested. SO would you say this is the time of year for this or is it on going or just barely getting started?

Another off beat question but not too far I hope...
Anyone do any smelt dipping?
It was a big past time back home in Michigan and the stuff we hauled on a typical weekend dipping smelt after a day fishing for perch would put a smile on your face.
I have only heard limited information about it out here and was wondering if anyone has done it out here or had any success?

Sorry what did you say I was daydreaming about my Photo shoot for the cover of Bowhunter Magazine!

The season is just starting but off to a good start. I will check on the prices for tuna off the boats but right now the boats are selling to the canneries for 1 dollar but that will go down as more fish come in. Most of the boats that sell off the dock are just heading out so by next week-end there will be fish on the dock.

I just came from the marina and fresh tuna signs are up on the road and top of the dock the guy I talked sells the fish whole off his boat for 2 a pound and will cut loins. Some people buy them whole and some just buy the loins.

i was in Ilwaco the weekend before last and tuna was running 2.50 per lb whole. We ususally wait until it drops to about 1.75 and then buy 6-7 fish to can.
Some animals WERE harmed in the making of this Hunter. They were also dragged through the dirt, butchered and tasted delicious fried with butter and bacon.

They will have tuna into september on the docks. The fish now bite best on trolled tuna jigs but in august start hitting bait and thats when both the charters and trollers really do well. Let me know when your heading over and I can let you know the price most of the docks will have boats selling. There is one boat on dock 3 that just stays tied up and buys from other fisherman and he is always there the boat is the hustler.

Wow!!  Is that 275 tuna or 275 lbs. of tuna by ten?   that is unreal!

Would love to go out for tuna. Anybody know of a good charter at a reasonable price?

I don't even buy the store bought canned tuna any more.  After canning a dozen jars of it last July I doubt I will ever go back to store bought again.
