At 9:30 I saw an antelope above me on the sandstone terraces. I stalked this buck to 10 yards among the rocks and sand. Eventually I knew it was really close but not it’s exact location as it was laying down. I shuffled my feet so it would stand out of the bed and give me a shot. It did and I took the shot and it hit good.

After it was hit it ran sideways and downhill with my arrow sticking out of it. It passed my friend Mike gasping "aaagggh", "aaaggh" who was below and he got to watch almost the whole thing go down. It eventually reached an 8-10 foot cliff and either jumped or fell over this down near the river. It survived this fall but my arrow was placed well. It stood once again just below me about 7 yards. I hit it with a second arrow. The second arrow ended him right away. He bled out profusely and died 5 yards away. He’s an ok buck. Not a trophy but respectable and the meat will be good.

That’s my first pronghorn and I was happy to have done it with my longbow. Today the weather was great and I am happy.

We'll get some pics up sunday or monday. I have some photos of my partner and his critters. I think I even have video of him shooting his buck.

Right On!! Any spot and stalk pronghorn is a BIG deal with a longbow!! Can't wait to see the pics. Heck, I spent three days in a blind to tag my first buck, and while it was great and all, nothing beats the challenge of a stalk in open country.

Which bow? Better have been your self bow or a Pacific Yew or Ole Hornseeker is going to have a complex with all of these Hawks killing everything in site. All but his of course.

Sorry for the blood. It was actually much worse and we moved him away and tried to turn him so there was less in the photo.

Took him with a Pacific Yew Take Down longbow (St. Charles not my make) 58 lbs @ 28 inches.

I still have a deer tag to try and fill. I am hoping to use one of my other bows for the December hunt. One of the bows I made this spring broke about one month ago. I am in the middle of putting a new one together out of Osage, hickory and yew.

Congrats to you. Not many guys can say they took an antelope with longbow. That is quite the accomplishment

Have shot lots of wt deer ( no mulies yet) , a bear and 2 cariboo with my longbow. Have yet to take a pronghorn.

Give me confidence to try for one next year if I can draw a tag.

It's definitely not impossible. Considering the large populations out where we hunted it was clearly a good time and place to bring the bow. Some of my results should be attributed to luck for certain.. But those who never try will never know as well..

If I was you I would look around the creeks or rivers, on the edges of hillsides or plateaus and for the lone pronghorn. It will be easier to sneak up one one or two than a larger group of pronghorn in most cases. I noticed that most hunters did not peer down odd hillsides and just looked for them in the open without wandering from their vehicles at all.

I was thinking about taking my 45/70 with open sights for a doe next week but thought it'd be a waste. Now i'm beginning to rethink that.

Ray, thanks to this thread about your recent pronghorn success, I can now put a face to the name; please forgive me for not putting it together sooner; remembering names isn't my strongest suit. Anyway, you mention a bow busting on you; was it the ipe & hickory??

I broke the Ipe and Bamboo longbow. The Ipe had a flaw in the lower limb wood where it compressed. It was not evident until tillering it down to size. By that time it was a little too late to swap the wood out and glue everything up. It eventually snapped and I had my eye on that spot already anticipating failure. So it definitely was not a surprise when it broke.

Thank you. He does eat real good. No sage taste at all. We have made about 5 or 6 dishes at home in the past week and replaced beef in the recipe with pronghorn. I was quite surprised how good the first taste was. In fact I should have probably shot a few more. I would have had I known it was that good.

Ray, do you use new age carbon/aluminum arrows with those bows or are they made from wood as well?

I shot it with carbon. I also have cedar shafts which I have used in the past as well.

Carbon Penetrates better than my cedar . Partly because of diameter differences and this was the first animal which I have shot with carbon shafts. However if I can find a reliable supply of IPE shafts I would like to give those a whirl.
