good grub...

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

To try to compare Washington with the premier muley states is crazy. Occasionally washington will produce a true bruiser muley but all in all confirmed, scored, kills on bucks over 190 are rare. Guys all say they see them but most shrink if they actually are harvested. Colorado has 2nd choice units that have more 180 bucks killed in them every year than Washingtons best units. Genetics dont lie. Look at the all time record book for bucks over 200 inches and compare Washington with these other states. It has neither the habitat nor the genetics to compete but that does not mean we cant have good hunting for good bucks. We have too many people and to few tags. I think the guy killed a decent buck for that tag based on a sketchy cell phone photo. It is not like the gov and raffle tag holders the last few years have been killing 240 inch bucks. Some have been real nice but real nice for Washington not Colorado or Utah.

The tag that went for 7.5k is a deal this year, from what I saw it looked like the tag last year went for 15k+, that is getting to be a lot of money. Since I would be happy with a 160-170 buck, that is a lot of money for me as I'd still have a good shot at one that size with a bonus rut tag, or in Montana.

True story Romulus, but when you know there is potential here such as what the gal got in the Wack, or that gentleman got on the firing center this year. I saw two bucks in the back of a tribal hunters rig in Republic that would put this buck to shame.  Those big bucks do exist.  We have more issues such as tribal hunting than Colorado has, more people after a dwindling resource etc.   There certainly could be some management changes, but then again, only a few would be able to reap the rewards of that.

Hopefully people don't think of a "governor's tag" as if they are just purchasing a B & C buck, but just as an opportunity to hunt a 4 month long season and take a decent, representative animal for what is available in this state. It's really sad when a guy cares nothing about the hunt except what his buck scores.

How many Washington Governor tag bucks did not score well? I don't consider myself a big mule deer trophy hunter in any regard, but I have to disagree somewhat. Regardless of what peoples hunting goals are, for that type of tag the majority of hunters will have the perception it is a true trophy hunt :twocents:.

I dont agree bobcat,  If you buy the gov tag, you are buying a B&C buck.  If you want hunt for four months apply for the multi season tag.  Its about 7350.00 cheaper.  Plus the guy who buys the gov tag most likley has a few other hunts he has purchased for the season so I bet hes not going to be hunting for his gov buck for four months.  Its more likely the raffle tag and the incentive tag guys will be hunting the four month time frame.  the new guy as proof, thats notr always true either.  In the end I would consider 7500.00  a "bargin"  :chuckle: for the tag.  If you book a guided 7 day hunt in one of Wyoming or Colorado's trophey units it will cost you 3500.00/4500.00 plus the tag 400.00 + or -.  Travel to and from another 400.00 + or -. and a guide tip 200.00/300.00.  On the high end of my estimate that is 5400.00  :yike: for a 7 day hunt in one unit.  for another 2000.00 you can get a goveners tag where you should be able to shoot a 190"+ buck with a little time invested.  Of course there will be additional costs for travel etc. associated with the gov tag but if you step back and think about its a pretty "good" deal considering previous years tag prices and other states gov tag prices  Have I over thought this or what?  :chuckle:

I'm not saying it's not a trophy hunt, just that to me it shouldn't be all about the score. If the guy kills a buck he's happy with that's all that should matter. And yes, for $7500 it's a great deal. If I had the money I would buy that tag for sure. Like others have said, if you really want a good buck you should go to another state, like Colorado.

Yes, other states are better than ours for trophy mule deer.

He paid more than $7500 for the tag. The state site is wrong. $7500 is what was paid for the whitetail tag and for some reason it is listed in the eastside category rather than the whitetail category. It went a little cheaper than years past but it was over 10K.
