Training books, dvds or both?
« on: January 20, 2010, 02:39:38 PM »
It has been 7 or 8 years since i had a dog and i have been thinking about getting a Chesapeake for a while. I want to get a couple training books to get an idea of the work involved in producing a gundog. I have noticed that the books are reasonable but the DVDs seem to be pricey. do you think DVDs are "required" for proper/adequate training?

I am planning on buying Evan Grahams books...

Spend the money on Evan's CD's or if you are considering competition work buy Mike Lardy's set. They are very user friendly and really help you get the idea of what he's trying to explain. I went to Evan's seminar in BC last year and I paid for the seminar again this April. There are still a few spots available for handlers and spectators. Handlers are $400 and spectators are $200. There is a sweet new log cabin on site which will sleep 6 for $80 per night. Right now I'm splitting it with one guy. Anyone interested PM me.

To bring your dog, you need to have solid force fetch, reliable retriever, be forced to back pile, dog should be collar conditioned and handle reliably. To spectate, you just need a pen and a good note pad and have an interest in working your dog for hunting or competition. All the drills and lessons will apply equally to making your dog better but, more importantly, teach you how to properly respond to problems and situations.

“Late Transition”
March 29 ~ April 1, 2010
Location:  Victoria, BC

About Evan Graham
Evan Graham was born November 6, 1946 in Long Beach, CA. He is recently retired from a metropolitan hospital as a Registered Nurse. He is married and has four children and ten grandchildren. He has also been a contributing writer for The Retriever Journal, and HRC Magazine, and has trained and handled many dogs that earned positions on the National Derby List, including five in a single year. One of them was number three with 49 points (seven wins). At least three of the dogs he trained, as a professional became Field Champions.
The driving force behind his development of the Smartwork system was the belief that one can never know how good any dog is whose Basics were not thorough. As a portion of the method refinement, he maintained a strong focus on efficient, effective Basics. The Smartwork system includes three books – each illustrated by the author – and currently eleven very detailed DVDs. A growing list of champions and accomplished retrievers are listed on the Rush Creek Press website, www.rushcreekpress.com.

Late Transition Outline – 4 Day Camp
Transition is the time after “Basics” and before you have a fully trained dog.  This seminar will help you and your dogs finesse your skills as you near the end of transition.  This seminar will also lead into some advanced skills for your fully trained retriever.   This 4 day camp will allow time to work on problem areas as well.  We will cover:
Finishing transition   Late transition marking   Bird placement
Advanced diversions   Land blinds   Water blinds
Cheating Singles   Troubleshooting   Tune up drills
Over/under drills   Chinese drills   Contrary blinds
The emphasis is to “train the trainer” and you will have many opportunities to learn these skills by working your dogs on a number of drills – keep in mind, not all dogs will work all drills – some dogs will be limited by their skill level or simply by the number of hours in the day.
•   ALL DOGS MUST:
   Be well beyond “basics”
   Have literal casting
   A reliable retrieve – this seminar will not cover force fetch
   Be working at a Senior~Qualifying level (younger dogs are welcomed but may not have as much working time depending on their skill level)

This is a great opportunity to get tuned up for trial season.
    Cost: Working - $400 (limited to 15) / Spectator $250
