"Nitrile gloves"
« on: May 01, 2010, 06:38:47 PM »
I was wondering why most people wear nitrile gloves when fishing?  :dunno:

To keep scent off of your baits.  Fish, especially salmon are very sensitive to human odors.  I don't use them, just keep my hands clean.

i'll wear them when i'm planning on handling some really sloppy eggs for the better part of a day.  that stuff's really rough on my hands.  when i used to be in printing, i think there was some kind of chemical reaction with ink or paper residue and every time i used eggs, like clockwork a week later the skin on my hands would die and peel off over the course of a few weeks.  i haven't had that problem lately but i'll often still wear the gloves.  i definitely wear them when i'm fishing tuna balls, that stench is something you can't scrub off.

of course there's the guys that say they're masking human scent, which is a bunch of BS.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

I use them to keep the stuff off me. I agree they don't keep our scents off the bait.  :twocents:

Is the taste of the bait worth the sting of the hook twice?

I use em for my sake too not the fish, I have to touch the outside of the gloves to put them on so why wouldn't the fish smell that after I touch the bait  :dunno:

Besides, they look cool in the photos !!  ;) Not that I have any !!  :P

I disagree with the thought the gloves don't keep scent off, they are of a material that doesn't hold scent thus doesn't give off scent.  I am a firm believer and practice this 100% when baiting up.....  So I must be "One of those guys" that believe the BS... Agree with the other part for sure- I'd rather not smell like I just been hanging out at the strip joint either...

Has any of you tried that Wonder Bar?  It is a metal bar that is supposed to take fish and bait stank off of your hands without using soap.  I have never tried it but a guy that I work with swears by the thing.

I only use them when fishing sloppy cured eggs.  The cure makes the skin on my hands die and peel off for weeks, as said above.

I don't know, I stuffed them into your carry bag or Man Purse (as you like to refer it as) last time you were on the boat, for you to experience that part of the dilemma when you get home.  Figured it would be funnier for you "without" a fish to explain the smell... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
