Now would you let these guys grow another year? (Update)
« on: July 31, 2010, 10:10:52 PM »
Last week I asked if you would let this first guy grow another year, and the majority of you said to shoot him.  Well, how about the rest of the bucks I got pics of this last week.  Would you let them grow another year?   :chuckle:

What do you think that last buck would score?

I think I found a honey hole!!!

I swear I saw a buck that looked liked that big one tonight!...on the edge of a wheat field...... It doesn't look like your fir forest is close to that wheat field.  :dunno:
I can't get that buck outta my head!
That is  an awesome buck   :o

Oddly enough, it is not the yellow block they are coming to.  I think it is called "Buck Licker", but I have Deer Cane at the base of the tree that they are hammering.  They are hardly touching that block, but hammering the deer cane.

If you get some pics after the velvets off, please post those.  That buck has got to be the best I've seen on the forum this year.

Nice bucks!  Are you going archery?

Yes I am this year.  1 Month and hopefully that big boy will be on the ground.  I just cannot believe I have 5 shooter bucks of that caliber coming into my stand.  I am checking the cams every 4-5 days now and getting upwards of 2000 pics.  That big guy came in at 10:00 yesterday morning and left at 12:30 or so, which is when I was planning on being up there to check the cams.  I got caught up doing something in town, so did not get up till 5pm, so I am glad I did not kick him out of the stand. I cannot wait for September!!!  :IBCOOL:

Right on!  You got a tree stand or ground blind?  I am going to have to give some of that deer cane a try.  If you need someone to cull out one of the "smaller" bucks just shout!  :chuckle:

I just got a treestand, and I am going to go set it up this week.  I am actually really excited for this deer season because my dad is coming up from Arizona to hunt for a month at the start of the general season.  He is the reason I even got a trail cam, so I could make this trip really worth it for him. I am also teaching a 14 year old to hunt with a bow this year, but do not want to spoil him with too big of a deer as his first.   :chuckle:

Way to go on teaching the youngster!  You deserve to let the air out of one of those pigs for that!

I hope carma does pay off.   :)  In all reality its been a pleasure teaching him.  He shot his first turkey last year, a jake, then followed it up with a Big Tom.  He hunted the first day of rifle deer last year, then ended up getting Pneomnia and was out the rest of the season.  He wanted to hunt archery this year for some reason, even though I encouraged him to get one with a rifle first, but he was set on it.  I just hope I can get him that first deer this year.  This year he pulled a double on his turkeys, jakes, but a double nonetheless.

I started taking my nephew when he was 12 and it has been very rewarding for me.  He killed deer his first 3 years hunting and last year was his first taste of getting skunked which I had a little to do with.  :)  He is 16 now and has a girlfriend and they are almost inseparable so it will be interesting to see how much he is into hunting this year.

The real questions is: do you let the first couple walk and wait for that masher...? :dunno:

(What a problem to have, huh..? ;))
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.  That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

I would let him walk, he has some ugly stuff at the bases of his rack that I wouldn't want hanging from my wall. Just my  :twocents:. I guess you could always grind that stuff off to make it look better!  :chuckle: :chuckle:

I actually think I would have to  :hunter:

I could rank the order in which I would shoot them. :chuckle: This year I will dump the first legal deer that gives me the chance.  I would let them grow, however, right until legal shooting light opening day.

As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Well guys, its been a tough early season.  The big one just completely disappeared  :(  I do stil have the Caribou looking buck, the perfect 4x4 and the big one with the split brow tine coming in.  I do not think I am going to be able to get in to this spot late season because of the snow, so if one of those 3 show up this week, I'm gonna fling an arrow.

We have set up some cams in the area trying to find the big one, but no luck yet.  I hope he comes back for rifle when my dad is here from arizona.  just wanted to update everyone.

If you need some help finding the big one, just PM the coordinates of the last place you got him with the trail cam, and I'll get out there this weekend and find him for you.    :hello:

He may have transitioned to a fall homerange or he is just moving less (the October Lull). I would continue with the cameras in the area and place other sets in good habitat within a mile or two (down hill if possible) of that location.
