Dry spell over! BUCK DOWN!
«
on:
October 18, 2010, 10:08:59 PM »
8am this morning, I spotted this guy about 100yds up the hill from me. One shot from a 130gr Berger VLD being pushed by 56 grains of H4831 and it was all over!
As he lay.
Just before we gutted him.
Side view of his rack and where I hit him in the neck.
Back at camp, getting ready to skin him out.
My two daughters were excited!
He was ready for winter.. lots of fat and long hair.
Dad was pretty happy. I was shooting his handloads.

I passed on two other bucks earlier in the morning. I was trying to get the angle on another buck I spotted when I seen this guy. He was looking right at me and I could not see all his points. He turned his head for a second to look at the other deer and I seen he was at least a 3pt. But the way he was standing I really did not have a good body shot. But his neck was wide open. My Howa loves them Berger bullets and I can consistently put them in sub MOA groups at 100yds. I felt confident in taking the neck shot as I was in the prone position with a good rest. Breath..... Relax.....Aim.... Squeeze..... BANG! Then all I could see in the scope was 4 feet pointing skyward as he rolled a couple of times.

Nice buck and way to put your dry spell to rest! Lots of blood on the ground there, looks like he pumped all his blood out in a hurry.

The wife is actually wanting to get a shoulder mount done. The cape was ruined from the neck shot, so would need a new one. I have not priced having one done, what do they run?

The cape wasn't necessarily ruined from a neck shot. It's amazing what a competent taxidermist can do. Also, they could use a pose that hides the area if necessary. I'd pm one of the very good taxidermists we have on H-W.
Gotta love a wife that doesn't try to rain on your parade!

The Wife dropped the head off at the taxidermist yesterday as well as the hide at Quil Ceda Tanning to get it done. She even has a spot picked out on the wall to hang him.

Awesome deal! Glad you got a nice buck. Its cool to have a wife that like to have deer on the wall! I sent my wife a pic of my buck from this year and she said ''why don't you get that one stuffed?" So I took him out to the taxi! Cant wait to see how your mount turns out! Congrats!

Drove up to Dad's place in Concrete last night after work. We started cutting on him around 7pm and finished at 11:30. Finally got home at 1:30 this morning. I cannot believe how much meat we got off of him. He was so fat, he had layers of fat under the meat. This boy was well fed.

Thanks.
Speaking of around camp...
Having two daughters and a wife who likes to use a lot of water, I knew the tank on the trailer would not last the whole trip. So, Dad came up with a great idea using a 12v water pump for an RV and powered it with our Honda generator. It took about 10min to fill our 40 gallon tank from the creek.
