My first deer!!! 3x3 watershed blacktail
« on: November 04, 2010, 09:31:42 AM »
Sorry for the long write up  :). This hunt was a special hunt for me since it was my first deer and i got to take it with my older brother. I was lucky enough to be selected for the Green river watershed permit this year and with not being able to get every day off for this permit i was limited to only a few days to hunt :(.  I went in on opening morning and could not find a deer for the life of me but saw many elk which was cool but i was on a mission for deer and i started to get concerned since i knew i was limited on my time in here. I saw the beautiful deer member (Trophyhunts) daughter tagged out on and i asked for any advice and he said to stay above the elk so that restored my confidence and for the rest of my hunt i had a better idea on where to focus so thank you Trophyhunt. As for the hunt it was 4:30pm and time was starting to go against us for the day and this deer was in a location my dad liks to refer to as the "frying pan" area because if you shoot one down there i am going to send you down with a frying pan and you can eat him down there since nobody is crazy enough to shoot one down in a hell hole like that  sorry dad you just found out your 2 sons are crazy enough to do just that. So once we get down to the deer my brother and i begin the process of getting him out of the canyon and before my brother came down to where i was he was smart enough to leave a note on his rig saying we are down in the canyon and left a walkie talkie next to the note and not more than 1 hour later the patrol guard (Jared) picked up the walkie talkie and asked if we need any help  :IBCOOL: that was music to our ears and he had a huge coil of rope and a pulley so 3 hours later we had our deer out of the nasty hole. Once we got the deer to the top i had a wired gut feeling that the tag that was strapped to the deer after i shot it could have come undone in the drag :yike:. So after a brief 5 minute search in the leaves i found my tag gave it a kiss and attached it again with electrical tape. I am 6'8" 240lbs and fairly athletic and this deer taught me that i am not as "athletic" as i once was since muscles i did not even know i had are on fire this morning. All in all this was an amazing hunt and i will be putting in for this hunt again as well as the elk hunt in this unit and hopefully one day i will be able to get back in to this beautiful place. On a side note there were some large bulls taken out as well during this hunt and the officer that helpd us ran into 4 bears- sow with 2 cubs and a large boar within 2-3 miles of where we got our deer just before he helped us pack our deer out. Off to the butcher  :) and good luck to anyone else still in the hunt. I cant figure how to post pictures of him so if anyone knows how to get pictures on here i can try to do it again.

before posting pics check for: hunters orange, tag on animal, flashlight on bow, and make sure blood is visible, (cut deer if necisary),    :chuckle:
