weatherby rifles?

just curious what people think about the weatherby mark v rifles...

im looking into getting a lightwieght version on 257 weatherby mag or 25-06 for hunting the high country...the 257mag is 1lb heavier according to the website at 6 3/4lbs compared to 5 3/4lbs for the 25-06.

The only problem that I have with the Weatherby is the price of the ammo. Even if you reload it is very expensive to acquire the brass.

I agree. 25-06 will be cheaper by far when it comes to brass or even finding and buying factory ammo. I assume you're reloading. Those weatherby's do have a good reputation for shooting tight groups.. Never owned one.

The 257Wby is about as good as things get(I've 3),though MKV's are shoddy in performance and value(I've alot more than 3).

The MKV's 9-lug locking system is a series of concessions,as is their inherent weight,poor ergo's and bottom rung stocks. The Vanguards trump them by a mile and are far more sound(twin opposed locking lugs,better triggers and superior balance/handling),as well as being offered in 257Wby(finally).

I shoot the 257Roberts,257Roberts Ackley Improved,25-284,25-06 and 25-06 Ackley Improved as well. The 25-284 will out agg the lot and scoot 75's at 3750fps/100's at 3400fps+,all via 23" tube and is my pick of the litter.

Now as to the most for the least,regarding the overall package(downrange performance,balance,handling,precision,yada,yada)...the 7WSM Kimber Montana is easily the best thing going over the counter. They've a 3.00"+ magbox,are throated in accordance to maximize same,hold 3 down,weigh little,wear superlative triggers and are amazingly accurate on the average.

To the 1000yd line the 257Wby will use less elevation input,but the 7WSM will arrive with far more residual velocity and less wind drift,which trump ele concerns.

I'm sure it's all over your head...but them is facts...................

im not gonna be reloading. and im just looking for the lightest rifle i can get. i dont care about recoil much. im just looking for a flat shooting very light wieght rifle.

any other sugjestions?

The .257 Wby is a great round..I've had one since 1980.  The mark V is not a light weight mountain rilfe...it is heavy as hell.  Don't know about the vangard tho'.   After I reloaded my wby brass too many times, I now make .257 brass out of 7mm Rem. Mag. empty brass.  The neck ends up alittle shorter, but works just as well.   I have had two strings of 7 one shot kills with mine on deer, elk and antelope and except for the weight,  it is a great rifle.

When I first got it..was a gift from the wife, it would not shoot less than 3 or 4 inches at 100 yards.  We happened to take the kids to Disneyland the next year and I went by the Weatherby office to complain.  They  said they coouldn't do much without the rifle and weren't too interested in my problem.  Then another fella came up to the counter and he took me for a little tour..went into Roy's office..he was not there.  Saw all the game mounts they had and then went down in the basement where they had an underground 100 yard shooting tunnel under the street.  That is where they shoot the rifle to produce the target that was sent with a new rifle.  There were one man shooting rifles all day.  The target that came with mine was less than 1", but mine would not.  The man downstairs suggested checking the bedding before I sent it back.  We rebedded it and it has shot < 3/4 " since.  I like it a lot.

I like them a lot Bankwalker but they are expensive.  If I paid that much I would want a rifle that could take down an elk so I would get the Mark V Ultra Lightweight in .280.  A 257 Wea Mag doesn't make much sense because it's 6 3/4 lbs and the .280 is 5 3/4.  By the way, there is a version out there called the Super Big Game Master or something that came with a good custom barrel in that gun.  It's supposed to be a great gun at about the same price.  You can find them around if you look.

yeah i plan on getting the ultra lightwieght and after looking at balistics im either going for 280 Or 30-06...if i go 06 i can have my buddie reload for me and he has some blazing fast 06 reloads.
