spearing a bear

just out of curiosity, i am wondering if given the rights to bait bears again, and spearing them with a hand held , made in the shop spear was the only legal hunting method how many of us would do it, oh and you don't get to carry a back up weapon either only a back up spear

What makes one want to know if another would spear a bear if legal???

i would given a back-up weapon, even though i really dont see the bear attacking after you spear it

guess some havnt heard of the practice, but i know of people in ak still that do it. spearing pigs is something i would like to try to some day

Sure, get my butt up in a nice tree stand with some downward facing spikes to keep angry bears from eating me after realizing I'm the one that chucked a javelin at their rib cage. Worse case I miss and have to eat the jelly donuts (used for bait) myself.

Whatever floats your boat i guess. In my case, I'd pass. My reason being that i cant envision being in a position to deliver a swift killing strike to the vitals with a spear and i wouldnt want to risk just injuring  the bear and possibly not recovering it.

I saw that one too. and cant imagine trying something similar with a bear..

I'll say yes tentatively. you're going to have to give more specifics about the regulations governing the use of spears (material allowed, length, point size/type limitations etc.). And since we are going medieval and i can't have a backup gun can i use a shield?

A small ish bear; 150lbs or less. Yes
I do some day want to hunt pigs with a knife though. Not the huge russian boars, just the local ones. Again 150lbs or less. Think it would be awesome to only have a 8" knife to kill em.

after seein a 40lb coon go full on pissed.....I think not. well, perhaps if  I can have some other native rights along with my spear chuckin' seson.

I watched a guy live and in person from 40 yards away use a spear on an absolutely huge feral pig once.  He shoved it in right behind the front shoulder, actually sliced the top of the heart and the pig took two steps before it toppled.  I have no idea how much this thing weighed, but it was enormous.  The blade on the spear was double edge with a hilt to it and was probably 16" long.  The spear handle was simply a handle from a shovel.  Was pretty darned effective I have to say.  Not really something I want to try, but pretty effective none the less and was pretty damned cool to see.

I would do it, assuming we'd get a special spearing season.  But I would want a scope on my spear.  And 209 ignition. 

Actually, not a chance.  I know that's how it was done before they figured out the stick and string trick, but I think the risk of not getting a humane kill on the bear (or myself, if he got to me) isn't worth it.  The human population has grown considerably since the days of spearing bear, and I'm sure that bringing back this particular tactic would slow that growth down a bit...

is this a hand jab or run & chuck? in my younger years i would say probley yes but i dont move that fast any more and after seeing a bear take a 30/06 to the face at 10' & run, well not so sure.
