What knots to tie with braided line?
« on: February 03, 2011, 10:52:34 AM »
I have never been much of a knot guy. I know a square knot for my baler's. I just run a swivel knot most of the time, when I am fishing. Then just a type of egg loop for my hook knots. My question is: I am starting to get back into fishing more and more. I think I want to try using some more braided lines. What knots work best? Can you just use a swivel knot? I have had guys tell me you can't use standard knots with the braided lines. Is there any truth to that? I have Dacron on my sturgeon pole. The swivel knot works well with it. But not sure on the braided stuff like spider wire etc.

Any info is appreciated,links/pictures are welcome too. Thanks

Well the braids definitely need different knots as it is more slippery then mono.  I use PowerPro quite a bit and I use the Uni Knot for most connections to terminal gear.  I cannot remember the name for the mono to braid knot but it is in the pamphlet that comes with the line.  Otherwise there are some really good knot sites on google.

I think most of the braids show knots that you can use with their lines in the packaging.  One I use is to make a loop the same as for mono, and then push through the eye and around the lure/swivel.  I also use a clinch or improved clinch if I was in a hurry.  This is strong but not as strong as some others.  Blood knot works for line to line.  It seems that knots that cinch at non-right angles work best as right angle ones might cut themselves more easily.

I have always used the traditional trileen knot. The difference with braid is I run twice through the eye of the hook, two loops, and twice through on the last step.

Another vote for the palomar knot. Easy to tie and hasn't failed me.

Thanks a bunch guys! I am not to proud to admit, That I suck at fishing knots! But I have spent the last half hour or so making the uni knot and Palomar knot! I like them both a ton!!!! I just went threw and retied all my knots on my gator pole. + All my pre-tied hook setups. That uni knot rocks for swivel connections! I think that will be my new bowfishing knot to me safety slides as well.

With the Palomar knot do you guys think it is stronger then the egg loops? I do 5 wraps threw the eye and 5 wraps again. I like it because I can use it to help hold the bait. But sometimes I don't need the loop and will now use the Palomar knot. But wanted to ask what you guys thought was stronger.

Thanks everyone now I am not a knot dummy :chuckle:

Agreed. NEVER had one slip as compared to several of the other options. I probably use this knot 95% of the time - braid, mono or fluoro. Just make sure with fluoro that it's clean when you cinch it. Have had problems breaking if I'm in a hurry and get sloppy.

Spooling up for a Halibut season, we felt the Powerpro we bought was not as strong as it should have been. We tested it at home and found it broke way too early, even with a palomar knot...  After contacted Berkley's rep....we were put in contact with a Berkley lab tech  and was able to over the phone convince them that their powerpro megaspool left the factory with the wrong label on it.... we used a palomar to test the tensile strength of our sample. Shipped the sample back and we were within one pound of the breaking strength of what the lab rat found. We got to keep the over 200bucks of line and put it on our salmon rods....  heh heh heh...

My point is that the Palomar knot is what we were advised to use to verify breaking strength....from the factory...

Go with the Palomar...

i use a palomar or a improved clinch knot, but i do 2 passes through the hook eye on the clinch, when im tying braided. i always make sure the line is wet before i tighten the clinch knot. both of these havent failed me yet.

when tying braided to a mono leader i use a nail knot, kinda a pain without one of those fancy knot tools, so i usually end up putting a barrel swivel between the braid and mono and tying two im. clinches
