If you can get that rifle cheap then buy it.  That cal is the best hat Weatherby makes in my opinion.

Why would someone pic a 340 Wby over a 338 RUM?  Serious question.  Seems like RUM brass would be less expensive, but ballistics has got to be about the same or better with the RUM.........

Here is the difference between the two curly. The 340wby has better ballistics then 338rum.

Brass:
340wby 2.00each
338rum 1.20each

340WBY-250g nosler part    100y+1.6/300y -6.9/400y -20.0/500y -40.4
energy                               4176         3120        2678        2286
fps                                    2743         2371        2197        2029

338 Rum 250g nosler part    100y+1.7/300y -7.6/400y -22.0/500y -44.7
energy                               3888       2807          2363         1977
fps                                    2647       2249          2064         1887

The load data that I looked at shows the RUM at about 2,900 fps........ :dunno:   The 338 Win mag can get around 2600 or so with the 250 gr.
Carp, those 338 RUM numbers look too low to me also.  I think a 338 RUM should at least match the 340 Wby if not exceed it.

Bob, here is the site that I use a lot you guys can check it out. I am just going by what it said. I have used it a lot, and seems most the info is pretty good. I have been playing with the hodgons books, and a few others today. The 2 rounds are about 95-98%% equal kinda depends on what book you are looking at. If the numbers look wrong from what I posted write them and let them know. :chuckle: They are not my numbers :P

Looks/sounds like a pretty nice rifle, any immediate intentions for it?
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Yes, it just mainly a squirrel gun. I think it might be a little light for yotes :lol4:

In all reality. I think a lot of time at the bench, and some serious money sent down range. I will always "prove" a gun when I get it. I must feel 100% confident with it, to what ever range it will be used for. I can't stand when guy "try" to shoot long range. Go sight there gun in at a 100yards and never shoot past that. Then get out in the field and spin there dial to 400+ yards and shoot :bash: A good long range shooter and hunter must prove the gun,his ammo, and himself with the combo he shoots.

After I get a feel for it, It might make the trip in May to Cali with me. To bust some hogs and get a few under our belt. I might consider taking it to New Zealand. But I hate to travel with any gun, worth a ton of value. The field is one thing, but airlines and baggage handlers are another. :yike:

Glad It could help you out. I have a ton of other info on BC of diffrent bullets and avg velocities and etc. If you handload and need any info I would be glad to share.
