Bow hunting in rifle season?
« on: March 03, 2011, 08:43:00 PM »
Hey all,
Im as green as it gets to hunting, and pretty new here.
Is it ok to hunt in a muzzleloader or rifle season with a bow?
The regs are confusing and ive heard different answers.

Eta: if you draw a multi season permit can you hunt all three?

You can use a bow but, you can only hunt with one group, archery, muzz,or rifle. Unless you get drawn for a multi season tag you must choose which group when you buy a tag. Correct me if i'm wrong!! I guess that answer's your question.

You can hunt during modern firearm season with a bow, if you have a modern firearm tag. To hunt during muzzleloader season you must have a muzzleloader tag, and you can only hunt with a muzzleloader.

Oh, and with the multi-season permit, you CAN hunt archery, muzzleloader, and modern firearm seasons. But again, you can only use a muzzleloader during muzzleloader season.

You may not hunt with archery equiptment during muzzleloader season. the regs state " muzzleloader tag holders can only hunt during muzzleloader seasons and MUST hunt with muzzleloader equiptment. "  You may use archery equiptment during rifle season if you have a rifle tag.

If your hunting with a bow during the modern season you still have to wear orange.

Even so, who would want to be out there with all the crazy MF guys dodging shots and fighting over animals?
I'd rather ask forgiveness than permission!

Firearms restricted area maybe? It's not all like that.

I'm with GreatWhite, why use a bow during rifle season? Get an archery tag and hunt the rut with the rest of us cavemen!

Firearm restricted areas i would think are the main reason that archery gear is allowed... Say every year you go out to deer camp wtih buddies for MF, but if you don't get something you want to hunt some place you have permission in the restricted area... And the land owner doesn't want to advertise what is going on... I know i've gotten permision that only allowed archery gear cause they didn't want to up set the neighbors.  :twocents:
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

In the unit where my cabin is the late whitetail season is rifle. The last four big bucks I killed were within 30 yards. I have often thought about using my bow during rifle season just because of that.

Yeah, might save a little meat at 30 yards! :chuckle:

I have 200 acres of private land not far from where I live, that I just recently got permission from the landowner to hunt- only thing is they will only allow bow hunting.

This was the reason why I bought a bow a couple months ago, and put in for the multi-season permit, but didn't draw it.  :bash:

So now I'm debating whether to get a rifle tag or an archery tag. Probably will go with the rifle tag and just hunt with a bow, because the rifle season is at a better time for blacktail deer. Plus there are a couple of rifle permits I want to apply for, and nothing for archery that I'm interested in.

Good plan - unless you really want to commit to bowhunting buy the rifle tag and if you have exclusive (or the access is limited to a few) for that property just use the bow.  You have to wear orange, which sucks, but it really probably doesn't matter all that much.
