Coweeman late muzzy cow
« on: June 14, 2011, 03:14:42 PM »
Anyone done it?  My wife drew the tag this year.  I've hunted there for archery and know the road systems and that there are tons of elk, but I'm curious how the hunt is with the gates open and the seasons having been open for 3 months.

Lots of elk in there, so I am sure you will get on a cow or two.

My son had that tag last year. I am familiar with the unit from other seasons, but it was our 1st time in for late muzz. He didn't score, but had several near misses.

I guess it was pretty much as I expected. Most areas had HEAVY road pressure. Saw very few hunters actually out of vehicles. There was snow- no it didn't help. Had a couple small groups dart the road on the 1st day; after that saw almost no elk near a road or in clear cuts except for a few at 1st and last light. Best bet is to find a secluded area that can't be seen from a road (hard to find) where the animals feel a little safer. Elk were spooky.
As you probably know there is not a ton of timber in that unit any more- most of it is either wide open or solid reprod.
It is a good tag, not a gimme. Average success as I recall is around 50%. I'd do it again. Put some time in and you'll get good opportunities. We should have scored, but my 12 year old was a little late on the trigger a few times, shot a limb, and flat out missed. Hope this helps
