October blacktails

This is my Blacktail from 8 years ago.   I got it about 10 AM on a clear hot day.  The buck was in the thickest brush ever and was just going to let me walk by at about 40 yards.  There was a miraculous sight line and I saw this deer laying down staring at me with his head near the ground trying to hide.   Every once in a while you can walk up on them even if they hear you or smell you.   The big bucks like to let you walk by rather than get shot in the ass.   This one scored 137, and I got him in Oregon before I moved up here.

Tons of great blackies.....  Heres 2 neither were in october  archery bucks, the second buck almost made it into october. Early season bowkill on the 30th. ( back when the season was that long) and the first was a late season buck.

I have gone back home and got a few bucks in Oregon with a late muzzy rut tag, but I am one pathetic loser here in Washington so far.   I've figured out the elk a bit, but havent taken the necessary time to figure out the blacktail hunting yet.   I was chasin girls year round, but now that I got married I have more time to chase deer and elk, so maybe this will be the season.     A 120+ class buck in Oregon is expected and routine for our late muzzy hunt in Southern Oregon.   They are on the correct side of the freeway, but they seem to grow bigger in So. Oregon and No. Cal than Washington.  Genetics, habitat, and hunting pressure are probably all big factors for that.

Is that a drawing for the muzzy hunt?

I actually got the buck during regular modern rifle season on a year where I didnt draw, but yes.....the muzzy hunt is a drawing.  I get it about every other year.   My dad and his buddy got 130 class bucks last year in their slippers drinking coffee.   They hadnt intended to road hunt, but they didnt have to get off the road to shoot their bucks.   I'll try to post those pics if I can get my dad to send them.

 Tremendous buck from Oregon. It will be a shock to you how much better hunting in Oregon is for blacktail I'm afraid. At best, Washington is OK at times, we are really losing habitat on the west side and what's left to hunt is generally hit too hard, or overgrown. I remember driving through the hills outside Roseburg, with nice mature buck's standing in every field, just crazy. I hunted the the Scappoose Unit a couple years ago for archery, nice looking area.

I've been here long enough to see the lack of deer and the abundance of hunters.   I've been here for 5 years now and only seriously hunted hard the last few seasons.   Not to put a downer on the thread here, but I do agree that Washington is not even in the same league as Oregon for hunting oportunities.   You've got a better chance with an OTC tag there than you do here with a permit.   It's pretty tiring to go further and further away from roads, and to devise all sorts of schemes trying to find areas where hunters arent only to find that there are other crazies like yourself willing to go that far as well.   Wasnt bad at all for deer season with a muzzleloader, but modern season is pretty packed in good places and muzzle elk season was absolutely nuts.  You hardly even see other road hunters in premier units in Oregon. lol

Got my dad to send me the pics of the two he and his buddy got in the same day that I was talking about earlier.  I also attached one other one my dad got a few years earlier.....  Pretty typical bucks for the late muzzy hunt in Oregon.   Looking forward to this hunt again next year...
