In Idaho I keep a vest in my pack but wear it at low light in the morning and then again coming out at night. But truly, if I'm worried about getting killed, I never should have driven to my spot because your probably 10,000 x more likely to get hurt in a wreck than to get shot in the woods.

WEAR THE ORANGE!!!  I had a buddy who was shot and killed about 6 years ago while hunting in Idaho on his family’s property.  He and his hunting partner that evening were supposed to be the only hunters on the property.  Another hunter (not supposed to be there) on the last evening of rifle season had mistaken him for a deer right at dusk and shot him while he was walking across a field on his way back to the truck.  Plus my buddy was even wearing a small orange vest.  Unless archery hunting I would wear lots of orange at all times regardless which state I am hunting.  I personally have not rifle hunted since.  Deer will not notice the difference, although another hunter will.  It is not worth the risk.  We all know there are plenty of ethical hunters out there, although it only takes that one unethical hunter to make a that one mistake.  Even hunting on private property does not justify not wearing hunter orange, because believe it or not people ignore the law and trespass all the time.  :bdid:  Good luck out there guys & gals and be safe!!!

We read about this sort of incident in N. Idaho about every other year.  Many are stories similar to this.  There was a story in the last few years not far from Lake Coeur d'Alene, just like mentioned above.  Not sure if they are the same tragic incident or not.

that story definatly makes a guy think thats for sure, i know i make my son wear his all the time i guess i should follow suit after all i guess i aint settn a good example by only maken him wear it all the time and i only wear it sometimes, i just hate wearing it when i am by myself in some crap hole thick jungle beacause of the way the orange glares off of the vegitation, but i always do have on my red wool plaid huntn coat and if a hunter cant tell me apart from a deer then that really sucks, but from this point on whenever i am with my son i will be wearing it all the time, thanks for the idaho story.

So much to think about and evaluate. It really comes down to the idea, is it worth the risk...?  :o

(whacker1) This incident occurred about 5-10 miles south of Plummer, ID which is not to far from Lake Coeur d’ Alene.  So, I image it was the same story you read about.  Very sad deal …

This is why whenever I take my horses into the woods during hunting season they are decked out in orange!  My daughter and I are getting back into the hunting on horseback thing and I make damn sure that she is as visible and the noon time sun!

Yep. I can hunt year after year wearing orange but probably only get shot once.

Makes no sense why you wouldn't wear it.  For those that say they don't want other hunters to know their spots, that's how you get shot.  Some moron who happens upon your secret hiding hole and sees something move, mistakes the branches around you for antlers and fires.  Sad to say, but there are plenty of morons in this world, and several of them will be carrying high powered rifles in the woods next week.  If anything, the orange should help deter that from happening.  I'd be willing to bet that 99.9% of the time the orange would keep you from ever ending up in someone's scope to begin with.  And as many have said, the deer can't tell the difference.  They should be the least of your worries.  It's a no brainer if you ask me.   :twocents:

That's a good way to look at it, if its something you absolutely will make your kids do then you should probably do the same.  I'm guilty in this subject, and the same should go with seatbelts (once again, guilty) lead by example.  Nobody wants to die this way, and nobody wants to lose family or friends this tragic way.  A good thing can turn in to a nightmare in a hurry, that could be avoidable.
When you see the third, thin the herd.
Right now I'm somewhere picking up sheds.

I got more diligent about wearing the seat belt when my son started asking me "Daddy aren't you going to put on your seat belt?"  That is hard to say no to..... Now it is habit

If the rifles are out I wear orange, have a net vest that breaths I can put on over any clothes and be comfortable why (I have been shot at two times).
