would you wear orange?
« on: October 06, 2011, 01:25:51 PM »
We are going to Idaho for the deer opener and if you didn't know, hunter orange is not required there but it is highly recommended. My question is, would you still wear it? I am not sure what I am going to do. My backback has a piece of orange that you can pull out of a pocket and I might do that until we get a little ways from the road or if we get a deer down. What would you guys do?  :dunno:

During rifle season. you bet!  There re far too many gomers out there taking long range pot shots at anything that is dark in color and moves.  :twocents:

I might wear my orange vest but I wouldn't go out of my way to make sure it's visible at all times. For instance if my backpack covered the entire back half of it I woudln't worry about it. And if I had to put a rain coat over the top of it I would do that too. Sure would be nice not to have to worry about always having 400 square inches of orange showing.

Basically the only reason I would wear my orange vest is because I like having all the pockets. I sometimes wear it instead of a pack, because I can carry quite a bit of stuff just in the back pouch of my vest.

If you end up hunting in a place where you don't feel safe due to bullets going every which way, I'd find a different place to hunt.

I just wear an orange baseball hat in no orange required states.
If I'm in an area where I'm pretty confident none to not many others are, I don't even do the orange hat.

I've shot plenty of deer during rifle season while wearing orange and can't think of a valid reason why not to wear it.  The deer won't know the difference.  The other hunters will.   :twocents:

Personally I wouldn't wear it, but it sure wouldn't be a bad idea and its not going to make a difference on a deer seeing you or not (in most cases). I always pack a lightweight vest in my pack for when I get a deer down, for several reasons.

For me, part of the reason I don't want to wear it is I don't really like other hunters knowing where I am. I like to get a long way off the roads so I am not as worried about it being crawling with hunters but I like the idea of playing it by ear and seeing if I see many other hunters where we are hunting and going from there.

Moving I'd wear it. While hunkerd in, I opt out as to be a little les visable to the crowds.

That is exactly what I was thinking. When I am moving, I will be wearing my backpack and I will leave the orange flap out and when I sit down to glass I will make sure it isn't visible. The majority of my days will most likely be spent on top of ridges sitting and glassing

Atleast wear an orange hat, maybe with a camo blend, when peaking over a skyline a guy may mistake your head for a yote. i know this because it happened to me. half the people that rifle hunt maybe more than half are friggin idiots.
