The cascara berries were very disapointing. They are usually ripe by the first of September but I think they will be a few weeks later this year. There also seems to be alot less berries and many buds didn't seem to develope. Pretty sad crop for sure.

Are those the bushes that kinda look like a willow but they have berries on em?  I've never know what those were called?  Those berries aren't edible are they?

It's strange... the berry crop on the east side is awesome.  Hucks are unbelievable this year. 

Most people confuse cascara with alder. You can eat the berries if you want, but you will need lots of to. Their is a reason that it is called Chitum.

So I know some felt betrayed by my other CF post..   But here is what Killbilly and I came across tonight.

The Cascara is getting ripe quick.



Here is a shot of two of the three seeds.



Salal berries are also getting ripe.

Not sure where you went up in CF and got those pic's but the Salal and Cascara I've seen is still green and not close to ripe.  Maybe I am up higher than you guys?

I spent three evenings hunting a few places up at work. Haven't wanted to venture too far until the berries are ripe. A few are now but it shouldn't be "good" for another 2 weeks. 4 bears so far but only one worth taking a second look at. I'm going to try for 2 over 300 this year ~ but there's a few bigger ones running around that I see every now and then. All I've got to do is connect. With the new rifle I'm hoping that shouldn't be a problem. Anyways, a few shots of one place:

Went out for a bit this morning and made two stands. Mostly scouting. We found an area where the Cascara is full on, but no bear sign.  I think we saw about 10 deer and took a few pics as well.

Still spotted. This fella was bedded down with mamma about 30 yards away.



Young yote. 100 yard standing off-hand shot hit it a bit forward and it bounced about until I could put a second in it. Used a hand call this time.



A hatfull of fungus among us. Finally found my first batch of Chanterelles this year. Normally we find some in July but not this year. Next week should be better.



Signs of the times? Not sure how I feel about this since there are no houses around.

The white No Shooting sign are the ones I saw in the area you showed me Billy.  I haven't seen any of the orange No Shooting signs yet though.

recommendations.......

after not shooting a rifle for a season and getting a new scope......check the mounts that the smith puts on and double check that there tight, because if they are not tightened all the way they will come loose and you will miss ......miss .....and miss again .......

BTKR, the shrooms were great with the steak. Even better than your 100 yd offhand shot at the Yote after running 50 yds.  I'll wager none of knew he could run.....  one dead yote though.

How did we get scopes mounts on a Notes from the field thread?

well from the field if your gear isnt properly put together than you cant properly hunt in the field.......as proved by me a few times over.......

I bet they tasted even better since you didn't have to go up and get them..lol

Your probably right, I bet most didn't think I could or would run. I was definately out of breath on that one.
