SCARY expereince with black bear!!
« on: June 17, 2012, 08:43:09 PM »
I went out to check my cameras today, and got the sheet scared out of me.
I had just got off my mtn bike, and was walking down an old grass covered logging road. When I came around a corner there was a doe standing in the middle of the road about 75ft away. She was just standing there as I kept walking closer. I expected her to take off at any moment, but she just stood her ground. When I was about 25ft from her I herd a fawn start bleating in the brush to my left. I took a couple feet closer to the side of the road, and noticed the ground all tore up, and a small clump of deer hair. I bent over to pick up the hair, and at that time something came crashing through the brush towards me. I stood up quick to see a 200lb+ bear comming right at me :yike: :yike:. I Started yelling at him, and through my hands up. He stopped about 10ft from me, and turned around went back toward the fawn that was bleating non stop during all this. I jumped up on a stump to try and see him. He kept chattering at me and would stand on back 2 feet to look at me at about 30ft in the salmon berry brush.
It was pretty clear that he wasn't going to leave his fawn, and I really didn't need to check that camera, so I backed out of there very carefully.
I have been thinking about getting a hand gun for awhile. Think i'm gonna actually do that.  :chuckle:

Wow, quite the experience. I have been charged by a bear also. I never go to the woods with out a weapon. Glad you are ok, I am sure the fawn is not.

Carry bear spray next time until you get your hands on a good weapon,  carry bear spray anyways might be times the bear is too close but doesn't warrant shooting.

would be a good place to call this september, you are getting a bear tag no?

I just bought a Sig 9mm because I have seen 2 cat kills and lots of tracks in one of the areas I have a camera set and my wife told me too(awesome excuse for a new pistol, huh).  I always felt safe just having my hunting knives on me until I walked ontop of the second cat kill and the hair on the back of my neck stood up and my mind said what the F_ck are you examining this so close 4..  :yike:

Yea I am a little dissapointed in myself that I didn't figure out what was going on a little sooner  I have never actually heard a fawn bleet. As soon as I saw the clump of hair I new something was not right.

Yeah the bears are hammering the fawns right now. They take a lot more than people think.

I've had a couple pucker moments, last summer was the final straw.

I will be armed every time I step out the truck this year to the woods.

My folks heard a fawn bleeting late last night near the house out in the hayfield - I'll be up there yote hunting in the very near future.

I wander what a cat would have done in the same situation?

I had my knife, but it was in my backpack. After getting a very close look at that bear, My knife felt a little weak :chuckle:

One of my trail cameras that I had out and just checked Friday, had only two pictures, and then for some reason it shut itself off, but here are the two pictures, and the 2nd one is blurry because the animal was moving fairly fast, but it sure looks like a bear to me. And look at the short amount of time there was between the deer and the bear. Sure made me wonder why the bear was right behind the deer like that. Let me know if I'm crazy and if that doesn't look anything like a bear, I just don't know what else it could be. (the clock is correct except it should read "PM" not "AM."
