Anyone else with an empty freezer?
« on: September 02, 2015, 11:50:46 AM »
After not hunting last year, my freezer has one steak and 3lbs of burger left.  First deer I see this year that I think I can get 50lbs of meat off of is hitting the dirt.  One of these years, between my boys and I, we'll have enough meat in the freezer the following season where I'll feel like I can be a bit more selective.

Anyone else popping the first legal deer they see?

I'm down to soup bones in the freezer at this point.  I took a buck last year, so I think I will be more likely to pull the trigger on a doe this year (I hunt blackpowder).  The hide seems to disappear on nice fat does, and the animal becomes a walking set of backstrap, loins, and hams... hard to pass up!

Funny you mention this as I am opposite this season for once. I was going through some gear in my garage this weekend and noticed that my mom had unplugged my chest freezer...  :yike: Luckily only a few packages of steaks on top were thawed but were still plenty cold so I just brought them in to cook them up. I decided it would be as good as time as ever to defrost and clean that freezer so I transferred what was in there over to my upright freezer. I had no idea that I had as much left as I did. I am going to Wyoming and Montana for deer this year so I can be super picky as I have close to enough meat as is right now. I am lucky though in that its just me in my house so a deer lasts me a long time.

I have the same issue.  I've got a beef, a pig, an elk, and them some random deer left from a few years ago.  Add about a dozen salmon and dozen bottom fish and I don't really need to harvest anything this year.  It's a good problem to have!

Empty of steaks, yes. I do have about 30-40 pounds of ground meat in one freezer. With a trip to Wyoming coming up soon, I'm hoping to put at least two deer and two antelope in the freezer. So that should help to solve the lack of steaks problem. But only for a short while. We go through the steaks pretty quick.

I wasn't able to get out last year either for deer or duck season. My freezer currently only has 1 crab left, and now a few salmon I've put in. I need to get a deer this next month, unfortunately the area I used to hunt got developed.

Deer never seem to last all that long.  They really don't amount to all that much meat unless you shoot an exceptionally large one.

Good luck to everyone filling their freezer! This early wet weather keeps tricking me into thinking it is later in the year than it really is.

My girlfriend and I have a couple deer roasts and probably 6 lbs. of burger left. She does archery and I got the multi season tag for deer this year so i plan on being a little picky. If I have no luck, then there's always DOEcember :chuckle:

I've been think of the freezer situation too. Took a bull last year so had plenty early on. I'm used to rationing it to last. With a WY antelope trip coming up, elk only days away, and  the always archery doe tag possibly I should thin the freezer a bit. Nice problem to have I hope!

Nope....   8)  I'll probably give most of my elk away, if I get one.
