i dont even bother any more. of the several that i have called over the years ive gotten no permission, half the time they never answer, the other half its always- sorry but i have regulars that come over every year & i like to keep pressure down. i understand that it is there property but it seems to me they are being paid to opperate thier own private preserve. nothing says they have to give permission to thier private property but they shouldnt get paid to allow just buddies & kin.

There are a few land owners that use the system the way it is and was set up for but for the most part it is a big joke!  Your tax and license money goes to pay for WDFW to post their land so the owner, his family, and close buddies can hunt.  Saves him the time and money to post his own lands and he has total control on who and how many people can hunt.  The Feel Free to Hunt program and the register program work well, but this program here in south eastern WA is a joke that we as hunters are flipping the bill for.   Now some will argue with me and there are some land owners that do it right but my Buddy who is a biologist for the state here in the Tri-Cities will tell you the game dept is getting tired of posting and patrolling ranchers land that have no intention of letting anyone hunt except close friends and family.  Good luck.

Couldn't agree with you more!  In this area its a joke.

I have a friend that's property is posted HUNTING BY WRITTEN PERMISSION ONLY, and I know for a fact that he put the signs up himself. I'm not sure how they did it in SE Washington but at his place the F&G doesn't do a damn thing to help them? All they do is make money off of special applications that they sell to youth hunters. I have also never seen them patrol his propery or the perimeter of it. They don't fix fence when someone cuts it to get a 4 wheeler in so they can get their animal that they shot right behind the shoulder and yet it managed to run 400yds onto his place to die. They tell them to call a tow truck when someone is blocking their gate and trespassing because they're busy.

I think that sometimes the F&G has the landowner post their property incorrectly, and then the public reads these signs and it can turn into a big misunderstanding. Take my friend for example, the only way that he agreed to let people onto his place was for them to be youth hunters through a special draw. Yet they gave him HUNTING BY WRITTEN PERMISSION ONLY signs to put on his fence line? Which from reading into these programs I believe it should say  PERMIT ONLY AREA. So remember that it's not always the landowner at fault for things like this. I know that this is the only example that I know of and it's not always the case, but this is how things go on his place.

You guys are out of date. :chuckle:
There is:
 feel free to hunt
hunting with written permission
and now
hunting by reservation
You have to go to the wdfw site where there are maps of participating land owners.
The idea behind this is to give the property time to rest.
So if you are a deer hunter and reserve a spot, you and maybe one other hunter can hunt the land.

The details are on the web site.
(I do not have a link for you)
Gathering is easy. Hunting is a challenge.

how do you get their phone numbers to contact them?
Off the signs posting their land.

Cole's place is a lot different than most.  I have called on many and talked face to face with many over the years and like stated before if it is during rifle season you are probably s.o.l because friends and family have all the permission slips.

This topic covers most of what you guys are asking.

In summery the WDFW has joined forces with the CRP program at times to keep marginal fam land in native cover for animals. In many cases PERMISSION was NOT required to give out. The hunting by permission only signs were put out on ANY land the WDFW lent funds to EVEN if no permission was going to be granted.  :twocents:

I have been out there early July working hard to secure a place to deer hunt. I got no answer most of the time I called the numbers. When a person did answer, he said no, I wont give you permission, its way to early, hunting season is a few months away. So....I have not had the best luck with the hunting by permission program. I did access some ground, but not my first choice by a long shot.

From what people have been posting it sounds like his situation is different than most. I know that I have limited knowledge of the program, due to the fact that I've never tried to contact land owners that are involved in it. I just wanted to point out that atleast in his case it's not him at fault.

There are some GREAT landowners in this program and some TERRIBLE landowners in this program.

I personally have only used the written permission program in Whitman County and never had a problem.

think small  aim small the big bucks are not where you would think ....
