  A friend of mine went there to visit his inlaws for the first time a few years ago so he decided he would try hunting while there OMG, the stories he told me had me about peeing my pants. The pics were increadible. HE said you couldn't look in any direction without seeing a guy in a tree stand or one on the ground. There were a couple semi trailers in the parking lot of the local Walmart were hunters would drop off their animals for processing, the trailers in the pics were full of whitetails. He said they get their meat about a month after dropping them off.

On top of all this he said there were 3 hunters shot during the week he was there, said he would never do it again. I dont know where he was but I'm sure its not like that everywhere in the state.

The do have chronic wasting disease in the population.  Check the WA regs about bringing the meat and head back to the state.

They do have a lot of big deer...

Where my friends dad lives you have to shoot a doe before you can buy a buck tag does that tell you anything.

I’ve hunted there when I was in going to school.  Over population is a problem in some places and they have what they call the “earn a buck” program (or at least they used to).  You have to take a doe before you can take a buck.

There is some public land but it is really crowded, if you have access to private there is very good hunting to be had.  Good bird hunting as well, ruffed grouse, pheasant waterfowl.

I have some distant relatives they I recently became acquainted with they have a cabin there so I am kinda assuming private property, I don't know3 alot of details yet. I do know its over Thanksgiving weekend not even sure where in the state. thanks for the info JB

Go!  Wisconsin also has the most B&C entries of any state.  They have more than enough deer for all the hunters, and a very real chance at a trophy.  GO!

I was born and raised in WI.  Hunted deer nearly my whole life.  The public lands in the south and NE parts of the state can be overridden with hunters.  The Chequamegan NF in the north central part can be phenominal, especially if you can get off the beaten path.  If you're willing to hike in a mile or better (and drag the whole carcass out as you have to register them that way) and you're patient a chance at a real monster is very good.  If you're tied to public land only, the state and federal lands in the Jackson-Juneau-Wood county areas can be excellent as well.  I had the good fortune of hunting my families properties mostly but I have hunted the above mentioned public tracts with pretty good success.  One caveat, I have not hunted in WI in 16 years or so, but I don't think things have changed very much.

I was also born and raised in WI. Just moved here from Platteville, in June.

Some suggestions:

GO! I plan and it everytime I go back to the relatives.

165 bucks for non res tag.

Only some southern counties, Dane, Green, Iowa I think have rifle restrictions.

In those counties there are the CWD zones, which is where you can shoot a deer and get an additional ticket..so on, so on.  There are unlimited tags there, so if you're shooting for the in laws freezer I would go south.

If you're looking for B&C bucks, there are a lot in the south as well, public land is much less accessible in WI than here in WA, there is no BLM and very little NF.

There are some pocket areas, of WDNR lands, the DNR in WI runs everything, so I can post some links to find public lands.  If you will be in the south of the state, I know a couple little honey holes.

If you're looking for a state with A LOT of deer Wisco is the way to go, you haven't been living in Wisconsin long enough if you haven't hit a deer.

My GF took out a nice 4 point, last year August, through the main street of our town, a town of 10000 too.

You will tag out, I promise you.

I too moved here from WI. just a couple of years ago. If you have the chance go I lived and hunted my whole life in central WI. and it can be unbelievable the amount of deer you will. Find out where your relatives land is and let me know might be able to help out with public land in the area. Don't plan on walking much unless you are up north in the national forest most people on private land sit in tree stand or ground blinds and wait.  It's pretty cool to hear opening morning at first shooting Hours there are a lot of shots fired.

I go back to WI every couple years for a deer hunt and visit family.  They're in the NW part of the state and we only hunt public.  I'm not going to goo this year but I keep in touch wth my family, this year bonus tags are $2.00 dollars each(doe tags)no "Buy a Buck " in thast part of the state.  My brother in laws used to cut deer at his little store, while I lived there. Iused to skin 200+ deer aseason for him.  This is the 2006 season deer I took there.











It took four grown men 2 1/2 hrs to get him from where I shot him to where we could get him in a vehicle.  I'm 5'8" tall and his nose is touching the ground.

Big bucks in WI can be taken.  Just find the biggest chunk of public land and spend the first few days of the season still hunting through the whole thing looking for places a deer has to pass through to get from one place to another.  Then when the guys head back in the woods after Thanksgiving you be sitting on one of those spots before the car doors start slaming even if you have to go in the night before and spend the night.
