What are your thought?
« on: November 11, 2012, 08:11:51 PM »
Talking with another hunter, his dad shot at a cow just before sunset.  They looked and couldnt find it that night.  The next day they found it and 24hrs had gone by, she was very much bloated by now.  With the meat ruined they left her lay, he had beed draw for a cow tag btw. First of all how long before you feel meat is ruined in high of 50 degrees, and also should he still be hunting or chalk it up as season done?

In this weather that cow is fine, please tell me it didn't go to waste!!!!!! Did they even open her up and smell, trust me, you will know if the meat is bad. I can't believe she was rancid that soon with these cold temps. What a waste............

Being bloated does not mean the meat has gone bad. Also depends on the shot. If it cut open the guts and all that bile got let out, then no it was probably not good. If it did not open that up chances are that it could still have been good. A lot of factors come in, was it in the sun/shotplacement etc. They should have at least made a effort to try to save the meat. Gutted it and smelled the meat etc. They probably would have got a ticket for wasting game :twocents:

I would have taken the quarters and straps.  Also the hide to donate.  It should have been tagged and his hunt over.

That's my  :twocents:

If nothing else, I would have made it dog food.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

First of all how long before you feel meat is ruined in high of 50 degrees, and also should he still be hunting or chalk it up as season done?

Some of that meat should have been salvagable, if not all of it.  And he definitely should not be hunting still...........he should get a ticket for wastage of game. :twocents:

I agree. Most of that meat should have been fine.

I didnt see the meat but was told it was toast, his dad packed up and left camp feeling his season was over.  I have never had this happen to me but would feel horrible and tag out.  What are the rules on this.  Lets say they never went back and found it?  At what point do you decide to not hunt the rest of the season?

Leaving game over night and finding it the next day...spoiled or not, he should have tagged it. that is a successful hunt imo  :twocents:
