what pound line do you use braided or mono
« on: January 21, 2013, 10:12:48 PM »
who uses braided for fishing other then stergeon? i used it in westport for a while but its such a pain in the butt to break off when its stuck so i went back to using 12 pound mono for bottom fishing for sea bass and 30 pound mono for lings i use 4 pound for catching perch  makes it more fun.

I use 30 or 50 lb for lings and rockfish, I like to be able to lift 15 pound rocks off the bottom if my hook won't pull loose.   :chuckle:  I use the same line for salmon.  I'd rather have to wrap my line on a cleat to break it off than lose a bunch of gear.

In freshwater (trout, bass, etc.) I like Trilene XL in about 12 pound.

I use 50lb spectra and a 30lb mono topshot for shallow water bottom fish. That way when you get hung up it just breaks the mono, plus mono is more abrasion resistant which is important when fishing in the rocks.

Mono for everything. Trilene XL in 6-12 pound for bass and trout, 12-40 pound Big Game for everything else.

i like using lighter lines but rock fishing its hard not to use 12-15 pounds or larger because the rocks i tryed using 6 out there and it kep breaking because it would rub on the rocks. i can use 4 pound on perch because i stand on the little beach thing were i fish so the line is not affected by rocks

I use braid 99% of the time. The only time I don't is when I'm drift fishing or chuckin hardware, which isn't too often anymore. I've tried plenty of brands but always go back to power pro.

Got you all beat 100-130 lb power pro  :chuckle: I like to be able to pull them off the bottom by the tail if need be  :o

24 oz jig in a 56 lb lings tail from 90'. Power pro 100 lb, 7' Tiger Uglystik, Penn 330, and one heck of a fight!!!

(Side note its legal to snag in salt water in AK)
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

Most of our 'butt fishing was done in 50 to 60 fathoms.  Mono just had too much stretch and drag when using heavy jigs at that depth.  50 or 80# braided was all we used on the boat.  Sometime plus a 40# mono leader if we had some good giant bay herring.  Largest 'butt to hit the deck was 187#!  Remington had some line out that we tested that was absolutely superb.  Too bad it never made it.  If I were running the boat today it would be Power Pro without question.  Still with Chameleon 40# leader if we had the bait.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Exactly, my thoughts....  All Salmon reels filled with 55lb Power pro and utilize leaders for presentation.  Do not need to change line each year like you would with mono, heck every few trips for that matter....  Sturgeon/Bottom fish reels, always 80lb Power Pro!  I do have mono on Steelhead reels...

I also used 50# braid when I went to AK a few years ago for sockeye.  Had to laugh at everyone else breaking off in the brush along the bank when I'd just pull the branches off and keep fishing.   :chuckle:
