first common merganser and golden eye today!
« on: December 15, 2013, 09:51:49 PM »
Well it wasn't the greatest day with the trolling motor battery dying but at least I was able to put down a couple new birds! My first Common Mergancer and Golden eye! Really cool looking ducks. Not the best day but it was a good day and I got a workout in.

Good old saw bills.  Saving a lot of fish when one of those hits the dirt.  On par with a cormorant.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

I don't know if I would take another one. My buddy is making jerky with the merganser and other divers. So we will see how it taste in jerky and then decide if I will take them down in the future. Although I do love fishing and hear they are a big predator. I am still a rookie at waterfowling so it was cool to get a couple of new species but I would of rather got into some mallards or geese obviously. Just having a blast either way. Had a great weekend last week and then at least got a new experience this weekend.

Back in the 1970's when my buddy and I duck hunted, if we saw the pink belly of a Merganser, We didn't shoot it!  They eat lots of greasy fish, and they taste like it!  The jerky might be good, though.  (IF it's made in a smoker that is only used for FISH!  :chuckle: )
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

Yeah that is what happens when you are not very good at any of them! You keep buying more hoping to sound better but now I am done buying. Time to practice! Maybe I will get more than gamcers and other divers coming in! :chuckle:

Nasty creatures!  Wish you could shoot them and leave lay like a varmint. All the ones I have shot smelled like a week old herring and the dog would not even touch them.

They are also very efficient fish predators. We observed them and kept track at a lake I used to work on and found an average merganser would account for approximately 30 coho fingerlings in a day when the fish were plentiful. When there is a group of ~100 mergansers hanging around in an area you do the math. We also researched the minimal basic metabolic rate on a merg and found they required somewhere around 2-3 oz. minimum of fatty fish to survive, I don't remember the exact figures but it was right in there somewhere.
