Cold bore hit @ 1700 yards w/ RBros 6.5X47L
« on: March 17, 2014, 09:35:36 PM »
We are testing a new target system for a friend as well as setting up for our upcoming match where one course of fire will involve shooting @ 1700 yards, just 60 yards shy of a mile.
with 4 of us on line and nasty winds, we proceeded to try out the 1700 yard target.
We set up a full sized IPSC AR500 steel target with a impact sensor that radios a signal to an LED light that is very visible with the unaided eye even at near a mile
We had Jesse shoot first as he is the most consistent of the 4 of us. Using his 338 Edge, he got on steel in short order. Even shooting the 300 gr Berger, the switchy winds played havoc and the shooter had to cycle his action with the bullet in mid flight, settle back into his rifle, then try and catch the same condition for follow up shots.
With nearly a 4 second TOF, there was plenty of time to settle in for a follow up.
Kirk fought the wind with his 338 Edge and finally connected as well.
The light guns were brought out and a 243 AI, a straight 243, a 260 and a 6.5X47 Lapua all sent rounds down range.
Pat fired up his DPMS 260 and saddled with having to run at about 6 power scored hits as well.
I was content watching and spotting, when a break  in the action called my name.
I loaded a mag of 130 VLD's in my 6.5X47 Lapua. Checked my drop to 1700 yards and dialed up 22.4MILs.
Asked  Jesse for a wind call and he  said try 5.5 MIL's, should get you in the ball park.
So with 22.4 up and 5.5 left I settled in, and  squeezed of the first shot out of my rifle this day.
Settling back in I waited out the ~4 second flight time, I noticed a flicker of light at 11O Clock in my scope and it took a split second to realize I had scored a cold bore shot just shy of a mile!
The hit on the target at 11:30 is my cold bore shot. Second picture is a few back to the firing line.

that is good shooting but everyone must know you cant shoot at animals at that distance.  I am not saying you are doing anything wrong in the least.  I am thinking about the hunters.  I have seen hunters shoot at an animal at 4 or 500 yards and if it did not fall over they would walk away.  totally dumb..  again I am not saying you are wrong in any way.  I have blasted away at targets 600 yards before just to see if I could hit it.     again  good shooting,   mike w

I was to mean that if a hunter takes a long shot he needs to follow it up and see if he made A HIT.  track it , etc.     if someone can shoot an animal a mile away go for it , but follow thru.  I have a hard time judging an animal at a distance, but if someone else can , and can shoot it then go for it and follow thru.    mike w.

Woodland...what is your spreadsheet for? Your gun? 7?

I will be the oddball!!! it's a good old 6.8x64, AKA 270 Winchester.

The spreadsheet is a modified Pesja Ballistics Excel spreadsheet in which I changed to suit my needs, added a few additional calculations for Spin, Cor, Eotvos and put it on my Work Crackberry.

So what you're saying is that I need to stop thinking about getting a R Bros rifle and just buy the thing!  I've never shot steel that far out, but even a 1,000 yds still makes me feel all warm and tingly inside.  Gotta find some time and get out past a 1,000 soon.

Nice shooting Jim!

Hopefully I can make the match.  Was checking my rifle for the Aoudad hunt in a couple weeks and she is ready.  Wasn't a mile but did do very well going 5 for 5 on clay pigeons at 1013.

That's really impressive with yesterday's winds!  Also, I really like that I can see my roof in your second picture!

WoodlandShooter, yes, we received your entry, thanks.
The 243 and 243AI both are fast twist custom rifles shooting the 115Dtac's.
Both scored hits at 1700.
Travis, really hope you can make it.
