What caliber do you carry in the woods

Just curious what caliber do you guys carry for your pistol, revolver when in the woods or fishing hiking etc... 40, .357, 44 etc. Thanks Jason

I carry a .357 daily and switch over to the hard cast for the woods simply because I don't have a better option.  I would carry a .44 if I had it.

Really depends on where I go and how I am packed. Generally .357 mag as a minimum. Use .45 ACP sometimes and then .44 mag if it's really wild country.

Well I carry a 1911 or my CZ 75 with a .22 conversion kit just for grouse or bunnies. If I was in bad bear country I may carry a 45 ACP or 45 LC.

Stock.  Never had an issue.  Hotter loads will smile a bit but I don't run them enough to warrant something like a KKM barrel and an upgraded spring/guide rod.

I run mine stock as well.  I don't shoot nuclear loads though, just warm ones.

I keep the barrels stock on my 6 Glocks, but I do change out the spring/guide rod with a SS replacement spring/guide rod.

I am obviously a Glock fan and I own a G23 and two G27's in Gen 1's, so I'm no recent convert.

I have seen only 2 mechanical failures with Glocks since they were first introduced, both were with the spring/guide rod assemblies.  Several reputable after market companies now produce most any 'upgraded' parts for Glocks.  I have found that 'I love My Glock' makes some very impressive aftermarket parts, to include these assemblies.  All of my Glocks now wear their SS spring/guide rod assembly with the exception of my two G43's.  They don't make one for this newer model, as yet, and from their staff's comments to me, they likely will not as they said they couldn't improve on that particular assembly....... .

Being SS, they are a bit heavier which helps with felt recoil, albeit, minimally so.  They are bulletproof in their manufacture and even though I doubt that I would ever experience a problem with the stock Glock assembly, a bit more confidence is never a bad thing.

BTW - all my Glocks also wear the 3.5 lb 'Ghost' triggers, as well.  Reduced take-up (creep), lighter pull weight (actually more in the 4-4.5lb range, but stock triggers are also closer to 6lbs. rather than the 5.5lbs. advertised)) and reduced to non-existent over-travel.  I'm no young man and the 'old dog, new tricks........' saying certainly applies to me.  But if something can be improved upon, I'm all about that.

Just some info that some might find helpful......

I use to carry my stainless Ruger GP100 - 357 magnum with the six inch barrel, but after a few stories of encounters with Meth Addicts up around the Darrington area I bought a Glock 20 - 10mm with the 15 round magazines. It seams there are more encounters with these type of parisites then with wild animals.

With Meth Freaks the higher round magazines might come in handy when they are armed themselves. I personally know five people who encountered these low life drug addicts out in the woods.

Larger caliber handguns and larger capicity magazines are top of my list as a carry defensive tool.
When in town I carry a Smith & Wesson 642 Airweight  38 + P loaded with Hornady Critical Defense.
Seattle travel I carry my stainless 80 series Colt Combat Commander 45acp. 1911.

You gotta love the 642 for what it offers, sans the woods, but most everything else.  I bought 5 at one time (less the IL), tuned them all up (reduced the stacking and trigger pull) and all those close to me got one.  As basic, reliable, ultra compact and a joy to shoot (I carry 135gr. 'Short Barrel' GD's) as any handgun I own.

I'm mostly a pistol guy, but I'll never part with the 642 nor my 629.  I must admit, however, with all this talk of the 10mm and knowing it's potential, one may find itself joining the 'herd' pretty soon............. .

As far as Pistols go I love the 1911 platform, I have the Colt Combat Commander that I shoot & carry in the s*** areas of Everett, Seattle & Tacoma, but for way out in the sticks I love high capicity & velocity of the Glock 20 in 10mm.

I do have a Kimber Pro Team Match Stainless slide & frame that I bought fifteen years ago up at Kellilrings that I never shot, never icerteted the magazine in the handgun. My second son will get it when I cash in my chips.

My first son got a Kimber 1911 in 10mm for his birthday last November that he used for his every day carry gun, he loves it and retired his  45 acp Kimber.

My second sone carries a Glock 20 - 10 mm evevy day and loves it, he shot a deer with it last deer season. Dropped it with one shot.


As far as the 642 goes it was the best $400 I ever spent for a conceal carry gun, I bought it new in the box from Norpoint in Arlington about 3 & a half years ago and have carried it EVERY DAY / ALL DAY since then. When I carry a larger handgun the  642 still goes in my rightb front pocket EVERY DAY/ALLDAY.

I help a friend out at a diary farm that pumps aroud 450 cows, they have a 5 - to 7% loss a year, I shoot 99% of the downed & dis-ables cows with my 642, drops them like a ton of bricks. If I'm at home andhe calls me up to drop one of them, I'll take another handgun to try out on them. all of my new to me (USED) hand guns have been used atleast once for this servive. Center fire of coarce, I never use rime-fire for this. If I were to use a rim-fire rifle to shoot a downed or dis-abled cow I'd use one of my 22 magnum rifles.
