Finally made it out and was disappointed. Stayed "close" to home with a 90 minute drive and did see grouse, five turkey, three deer - one at least 1.5 miles out and the other two in easy rifle range, but not a single elk. Anywhere. Was glassing other mountains just to see where they were - nothing. Didn't see them, didn't hear them, tried to get some talking, just not in the right area I guess. It was a tough hike. Wasn't that steep, I only climbed about 700 feet in elevation, but when at 11,400 feet 700 feet feels like a lot more and you get winded pretty easy way up there.

Don't have an archery deer tag for that area. A few minutes after that photo I went around the side looking for elk and there was that big deer again, within bow range. He was nice to look at

My buddy hit a deer high like that followed him all day with same result, nothing wrong.  Two days later in the same area he shot a buck chasing does and when we got up on him it was the same deer from before with a hole through and through up high.  They are tough animals, maybe you will get lucky like my buddy and get a shot at the same one again.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

Sorry! Been in the elk.  Had the bull of my dreams at 15 yards bedded ip on saturday. If it wasnt for his lady friend it would be BBD!!!  I should of waited for him to stand!!! Wind was perfect! But I tried to get around a 5 ft tree and got busted.

He is a herd bull with atleast 50-70 cows..  That crap aint easy to sneak into.  I called him in from 300 yards away but he stopped at a deep deep draw that he didnt want to cross. So now Im in his kitchen and waiting for sun up to let one run!!!

Rut activity is pretty good, 34 degrees and overcast.  Lets hope today is the day.

Good work rt.  way to give it a go.  Lots more tags to fill and plenty of time to do it.  Getting out and doing what we love is why we are there anyways right.  The steaks just a bonus.
