Crazy but I liked the 11-33X50 over the 20-60x65
« on: September 04, 2015, 08:17:03 PM »
Like I said was at sportsman and had the Tri pod out that I'm going to buy and decided to set a vortex razor 20-60x65. We took it out side and was looking at a hill 10 miles away.  I could see people and their dogs walking down a trail. I think the problem was the Tri pod but any ways I had It maxed out and was hard to look through with the wables.  Than decided to put on the little spotter 11-33x50. My friend and I were very amazed. That little thing was great. I could still see the hikers and the dogs on the trail. Not as shaky because it was only at 33x. Its so freaking little and light I literly put in my pocket.  For me this thing is the perfect back pack spotter.  You can put it in the glove box. For me this would be perfect. I'm not gonna be looking for deer 10miles away.  I can't say enough that think was awesome.

I have a 20X60X65 and usually start at about 20-25 power until I want a closer look and zoom it in until 40-50.  Then that extra zoom comes in handy.  Im sure yours will do great.

Nobody is going to be looking at deer 10 miles away. Ive been there done that with the little scopes and they're too limiting IMO.

I'm looking at the razor 11-33x50 as well.  Jakelope are you thinking its limiting because it tops out at 33x or is there something I'm missing?

Yeah. Probably not the end of the world, but id rather have the extra x's. With that said ive not had the little razor. If you have a big spotter and want a small dedicated backpacking spotter I think you cant go wrong. If you're like me and cant afford multiple spotters then id go for the 20-60x all day.

I didn't think Vortex's Razor had a 65 mm scope with a 20-60. I have a 16-48x65 Razor. They do make a 20-60x85.

The other obvious issue is you were comparing during retail hours. Where optics show their true colors comparatively is during dawn and dusk hours. :twocents:

With a smaller 50mm objective lens would the little razor do well during low-light hours? Any ideas?

My guess is it would work at 11 power, but if you increase that by much the exit pupil gets too small. Just think of it at 25 power, with the 50mm objective that's an exit pupil of 2mm. At that, there's just not going to be enough light getting through to your eye. Typical binoculars have an exit pupil of 4 to 5 millimeters.

Makes sense...thanks Bobcat.  Sounds like another good reason to try scopes out in low-light conditions before buying.  I appreciate the help.
