Best training collar for a my bird dog???
« on: October 07, 2015, 02:35:39 PM »
OK....I need to find out the best training collar for my bird dog.  She has great instinct and has done great the few times I have taken her out.  My one problem, she likes to chase deer.  For that reason, I have not taken her out.  Last year she didn't go at all.  I don't want another year to go by with her not hunting so I figure I need to get her a collar.  I figure I will buy a $200 collar that will only be used once, but in the long run it will be worth every penny.

Suggestions please and thanks

Johnny

The pic posted is her locked in on a spike mule deer.... :chuckle: :chuckle:  I think she is a little confused.

I have used tritronics and dogtra. Prefer the dogtra with a beeper/locator. You might find you like the location mode when dog is out of sight. good luck.

The name brands, Tri-tronics, Dogtra, and Sportdog are all good.  The more features it has the more it will cost.  For your particular problem I would recommend looking for one with a 1 mile range.  :twocents:

I have the TT upland G3,  it's great but it's a pre-garmen product.   goes from level 1 to level 5,  at 5 the dog will scream and squeal.  Training is down to 1.5 unless the dog is wet then it's down to 1

It's simple to use only 3 buttons,  one is a continuous zap then a momentary zap then a beeper controller.

Don't shy from a used one, you can get new batteries for the collar or even get them rebuilt

hrm,  just learned this
Tri-Tronics G2 and G3, Innotek, SportDog and Tracking Equipment products are not serviceable by Collar Clinic

Why would you only use it once? It's a pretty good insurance policy. Also, you need to do collar intro or you could ruin your dog. Buy something nice. You won't regret it.

She is a super smart and obedient dog.  Once I break her of liking deer the collar won't be necessary.  I am sure I will find other uses,  possibly on new dogs in the future......maybe on my kids  :chuckle: JOKING OF COURSE.

I am sure I get good use out of it and I have to do something....otherwise she will not get to do what she loves to do;  chase birds.

Only time a bird dog should be run without an ecollar on is at home or at a field trial. Deer, porcupines, skunks, snakes, bear, cougar, coyotes, roads...lots of hazards out there that a dog needs to be "persuaded" is a bad idea to mess with. Just make sure the dog understands how to "turn off the the juice" or you'll spend the rest of the day looking for the dog. Proper collar conditioning is key.

Ours behaves better just by having the collar on her, don't even have to use it.  She also gets really excited if we just pick it up because it means she is going to get to do something fun.   :chuckle:  We have a Sportdog, middle of the spectrum one.

Yep

Think it is important at an early timeline to train your dog to turn it off whether it be deer cats chickens other dogs chipmunks etc. I  tried to get on my young dog with long lead and e collar early command to leave it . Whistle, command, etc  ecollar  when my puppy chased deer she knew at at a you age not a positive behavior

Address itnas early as Possible. Have to work every day at least 15!minutes first year of training before ingrained behavior.  Want to encourage the predator behavior of course but try and set boundaries at a young age if possible.

I've been happy with the tritronics gear I've had over the years.  It's held up well.  My dogs always have a collar on when they're on the ground as well.  It rarely gets used, but if I need it, its there.

Seems that all the collars have gone to crap lately.  I remain a Tritonics fan, but they aren't half as good as they were 15 years ago.  Dogtra never lasted a dozen field trips for us.  Customer Service was great and they stood behind the product, but it took three or four replacements a year to make it through a season.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

I have a Tri-Tronics Classic 70 G3 EXP that I am going to sell if you decide to go that way.  Also, I have the tracer light on it.

What about the Garmin??

the garmin pro 70 does everything the classic 70 does/did with added LED lights that can be turned on/off remotely and the collars can be switched to a no bark collar if one so desires. also until november 1 st Garmin has a 50$ rebate so you can get a system for 250.00
