Elk Poachers...
« on: July 23, 2016, 03:52:24 PM »
PISS ME OFF!!!!!

Up the Colockum today and ran into 2 different spots(1/4 mile apart) where elk have been poached.  :bash:

1st one was a bull and had the antlers cut off...zero meat taken, looked to have been 2-4 days old, vultures and a bear were on it when I first saw it.
2nd one was a quarter mile or so up the road, nothing but a huge pile of dried blood, and some hair on the side of the road.
I also believe there was a 3rd one, saw 5 vultures flying from an area when I came upon it, walked around for awhile looking but didn't find any sign of dead animals  :dunno:

Yes, at 0730ish I reported it to the SP, said they would relay it to WDFW and that they may call me, as of 4pm....no call from WDFW......WTF?

Report the vultures laying in the weeds, I'd bet you might hear from them then.

I would guess no, at least not the body one. hard to say on the blood spot one.

There is a stretch of area here that this seems to happen in every year, thinking about getting some cheap t-cams to watch a couple spots

Yes, kind of. That's another beef I have. The "poaching hotline" is not "open" on the weekends.  :bash:  :bdid:
Reported to WSP who relays to WDFW. Couple times in the past I have did this and have always got a call back from a warden.....so far not this time. I will be raking them over the coals tomorrow.

The hours for the poaching hotline is in all regs and on the WDFW website, it is only operational during business hours. WSP dispatches for WDFW 24/7/365 which is why I tell people don't even bother with the poaching hotline.

I have always told officers to give a courtesy call to reporting parties, even if their the 10th person to make the call or won't be responding. I've always had an issue with an officer responding to an incident but not notifying the reporting party that they responded.

My buddy spotted a dead cow elk this weekend when we were scouting as well. Couldn't see any bullet holes or where any meat had been taken off, but, we also didn't stick around too long or inspect it closely, was a little stinky...

Many times if the horns are sawed off while there still in velvet its velvet they want . Certain ethnic groups use the velvet as an aphrodisiac. This happened a lot in the Lewis river area many years ago .

I doubt it. They would've taken the whole animal. There's zero reason for them to not take it out. So, that probably leaves white trash.  :dunno:

This is true poaching culprits should be hung. Thrill killers and someone who misidentifies an animal need to have different regulations. Thrill killers need to be removed from society.

I found three cows all shot with a gun and left to rot on the side of Wilson Creek road in 328 a few years back.  Game warden thought it was probably high school or college kids, it was right around graduation time, thrill kill kind of thing. :bash:

Who knows, but tribal (depending on the tribe) can be pretty bad too.  Some tribes let members designate someone else to shoot.  There would be cases where a couple guys get fifty tags and just go out shooting everything they can.  They like to shoot up the whole herd and then just take the bulls and spikes, leaving the cows and calves.

Tribal members have zero to gain from leaving the animal and nothing to lose by taking it. They know at the very least they can sell the meat. At best, it'll feed their family. It's the guys shooting for "the fun of it" who would leave the animal to rot.

Most, but they have plenty of bad apples too.  Not like they can't come back and shoot more the next day.

WDFW confirmed that it was shot, in the neck. They didn't say/ I didn't ask, if they recovered a bullet.
Just for the heck of it, I'm gonna hang a couple cheap cams to see what I may catch, never know.
