Air Sensors on tires.

Anyone know if there is a law requiring tire companies to replace air sensors for tire air monitors? When they mount used tires.

Think it depends on the company. I know Costco does it.  Not a law but probably company policy.

I've been out of the business for a few years but I think it is against the law to disable, or render TPMS inoperable.

The sensors are easy to break if not done properly. Imo they are just another idiot light on the dash.

Buddy of mine took his FJ in to a well know tire shop.
To have some used tires he bought mounted.
Two tires off rims and two different tires mounted balanced.
They told him they were required by law to install new sensors for air.

I don't doubt it's true, but what imminent threat to life and limb is the government trying to protect me from with this particular nanny-state law?

I think anyone who wheels, does thier own maintenance and such should do themselves a favor and learn how to mount/demount a passenger/pu Tire. A bare minimum of tools are actually necessary and there are lots of great videos online.

If your tired of nanny state restrictions and hard sell techniques find a llantaeria (spanish for tire shop)to have you flat fixed or your used Tire mounted. You won't get any freebies  but you will likely encounter less hastle.

Yes, but sounds like this company was forcing the customer to buy NEW sensors, that is BS and definitely NOT a law.  Makes me think the tech busted a sensor and was forcing the customer to pay for his mess up.  That said $152.00 for four new sensors is a pretty good price, I thought they were $50-150/ea depending on vehicle...

$152 for 4 is dirt cheap for 4 sensors.

I know Discount Tire sells "Sensor rebuild kits" when they sell tires. Also a BS charge.
