$3000 part?

Hey auto experts. My aunt just nailed the curb in a 2012 Nissan Juke and the mechanic told her that the rack ND pinion is going to cost her $3000 just for the part and a minimum of 1200 for the installation. Does that sound right to you guys/gals??

From a very very basic Google search of "2012 Nissan juke rack and pinion", it looks like prices are $300 - $700 depending on which route you go.

And then there is the whole assembly for $2850.

So, could be a fair price they are quoting.

Looking at the picture would you think the whole assembly needs to be replaced?

Hard to tell from that picture. Clearly the tie rods, rod ends, bolts, mount, etc. Gears inside could easily be striped and the assembly be jacked.

Just heard she got her quote from Les Schwab. Her brother is taking her to a collision repair center tomorrow.

Good to get another opinion.

Often times, the labor to disassemble, diagnose and repair the components in an assembly like that can eat up the initial price difference between the components and the assembly.  While you may save a few hundred bucks, you'd have an assembly that was a mix of new parts and parts that were involved in the accident. If you went that route, you'd need to trust your mechanic to be able to diagnose the issues correctly up front, or you'll be back to let him take another stab at it.

Looks like a little more than just a rack and pinion. That lower arm is toast.

That lower control arm looks bent too. Will also need an alignment.

I'd get it 5o a Collison  center there's way more bent than you see there

Take it to a actual mechanic. Les Schwab is for tires.
