MOAR scope sight in and dial question
« on: June 22, 2017, 09:42:13 AM »
So...having always used the hold over method for longer shots (typically with a boone and crocket reticle on a Leupold scope) I have always sighted my rifles in at 200 yards.  Now that I have a nightforce and the ability to dial my MOA what is the best way to sight in?  Do I sight in at 100 and dial to 200 and leave it put unless I am shooting beyond 300?  Do you guys like using the dials or the MOAR reticle for hold over?  I am digging the scope but now I need to learn to use it.  My plan is to use it to 600 yards.

Thanks for any insight in advance.

I'd still run 200 yard zero.  That way out to 275 or so you won't have to hold over, and it'll be just like you are used to.  Then dial for anything over 300 or so.

Sight in at 100 and hold using the reticle.

Do you have a level?

No, but could definitely get one if it makes that big a difference.  What ranges do you find a level helping, never used one and have shot toe 450-500 without the need.  Now...furthest I have ever taken game is around 400.

Sightin at 100 and zero there. Then set dial at 200 to hunt with. Dial for distance over 200.   To start print out chart for clicks / yards out to 700 and tape to stock. Or get yardage reticle or fancy rangefinder.   Past 700 yards you can get fancier but the basics will get you as far as you want now sounds like.

If you are using reticle for holdovers it's pretty important. I can't give a specific distance as I look for it all the time.

What i do, prolly not the correct way but it's been working is just figure out my max point blank range and zero it there..... your ballistic software will automatically account for the odd zero range

Not to derail your thread but what Nightforce did you go with. I'm in the planning stages of putting together a new rifle and was considering Leupold VX-5HD, Nightforce SHV and Vortex Viper Gen 2 PST $1000 or so was my target.

I just picked up a Nightforce SHV 5-20 with a MOAR reticle and I love it.

With the MOAR I zero at 200 yards and prefer to dial elevation for all of my shots if time allows.  In a hasty situation I will hold elevation out to about 400 yards.  In the field I don't dial for wind that is always a hold.
