Sportsmans Warehouse and minimum wage
« on: March 18, 2009, 11:28:51 PM »
I was reading some of the older posts this evening, and I came across a post where someone was saying they won't use the archery dept. at Sportsman's Warehouse because we are only paid minimum wage.  WTF >:(  Sportsman's Warehouse is not another Wal-Mart.  I get a fair wage for retail, paid vacation, paid holidays, and I have access to a health plan.  In addition some of the employee discounts are impressive, so I have some really nice chit too! :IBCOOL:

Never had a problem using the archery department there. And I don't know what a person makes there but that isn't one of my concerns when I need to have something done to my bow.

Thx.  If an opinion is based on bad product or poor service that is one thing, but to base an opinion on wages is kind of eliteist.

I know some people (myself included) would rather work for a lower wage and do something they enjoy rather than be in a box all day and make bigger money.  :twocents:

Wow Larry, someone found your soft spot >:(

I like the archery dept. at Sportsmens, (and its not because of you either, so do not get a big head) there is a good selection and you get better service than at Sportco. ( I will say i enjoy running in to you while i am there and our conversations)

Wait, what am i saying, Sportco is not known for customer service, only the "clutter"  :chuckle:

I like Sportsmans because they actually provide customer service, every time I have been in there I've quickly had help if I needed it............Cabela's makes me wonder if anyone actually works in the store

And because I have always worked in customer service type jobs THAT is one of the main criteria I judge a store on....bad customer service really irks me  >:(

i have no idea what thread you're talking about, but if i were to guess, i'd think someone would say that out of fairness to the employees. as in...i won't give them business because they only pay their employees minimum wage.
glad to see that is not the case. sounds like a fun and rewarding job.

They dont know what there talking about they need to get new people in there... there use to be some real good people in there now it went to crap....

I have no complaints with Rod at the Lacey Sportsmans.  He does a good job.  Very personable to boot.  I would highly recommend him.

The two I have been in have been a joke, the one guy told me that a bow will shoot smoother after he paper tunes it, then we asked him how to put a scope on a bow, he said it screws into thw riser!!!! down this way they screw up a ton of stuff and the work for the most part has been sloppy at best......

I'm sorry you have had trouble with your local Sportsman's.  I believe you were in the Federal Way store recently doing a seminar on sturgeon.  We didn't have a chance to talk, so I don't think your problems were with me :dunno:  In any case at least it's a legitimate complaint that has nothing to do with pay scales.

Which Sportsmans Warehouse do you work at?  That's a bit naive to not buy from a store because a guy in Archery is getting paid minimum wage(even if you're not).  If anything it would hurt this guy more than help him, if nobody buys from the Archery department then why would they ever pay you anymore??  Like somebody else mentioned, even if you do only make minimum wage it's a job that is related to what you enjoy doing and everybody knows, if you enjoy your job then it's never "work".

I like Sportsmans because they actually provide customer service, every time I have been in there I've quickly had help if I needed it............Cabela's makes me wonder if anyone actually works in the store

When I first got here I wouldn't even go to Cabelas b.c there was never anybody to help you there.  I went to Sportsmans warehouse exclusively, but recently every time I go in there they don't have anything stocked that I need.  I go to the one in Lacey and there's a guy that works in the firearms section named Chaz, always the first one to come out and help you find anything in the area.  Little disappointed the store doesn't stock a lot of the stuff I've bought recently because you can tell the guy doesn't like not being able to help a customer.

But, if you have trouble finding something in Cabelas head over to the reloading area.  For anything on the top floor, there's an older gentlemen who works at reloading named Ron (I believe) and he'll help you find anything you need.  Has some good advice on reloading as well and isn't concerned with the store making a buck, he'll set ya straight with something he personally feels is better value for your money.

Both are all around good guy's and both stores have their faults.

Holy Crap!  Why in the hell would you give a seminar at a Sportsmans Wharehouse one week, then bash them a week later.

Have some respect for yourself. Maintaining a relationship with a merchant like this should be a symbiotic relationship where you both benefit. Blessing a store you consider "a joke" with your presence is pathetic, arrogant and egotistical.

If I did not like a particular store, thought they were "a joke", I would not accept an arrangement where I gave a seminar. Wouldn't do it. I would politely decline.

I am an expert on very few if any topics. If I was, I would surely be careful to protect my image by only standing with others in the field who I believe have a good image. I would not hang my hat on a business I did not like. Good lord.

I have had only great experience in dealing with the Lacey Sportsmans Rod and Ray are awesome,  I did have a little trouble with the silverdale one. I have dealt with the Federal Way one recently and they were friendly and stayed open even past closing to help us. I don't ever remember asking what they make per hour to see if they are qualified to work on my bow, that is ridicules.  :twocents:

did you get paid for the seminar you held? if so lame for bashing them...was it ok to make a little coin but not good enough for your archery needs?
