Fishing in BC, camping and marina?

Does BC have a resort, where one can camp RV style or tent, moor a boat? Similar to what Olson's (Manson's) is in Sekiu? Just curious.

I think they have a bunch. Do you know what area you want to go to? Or type of fishing?

Salmon, halibut, bottomfish, that's what we are looking for. I've looked online but found damn little, more like any.

I've camped in Ucelet and powel cambell river on the island and several places on the mainland.

I want to go to Bella Coola next, but I need to research the new fishing restrictions before I go anywhere, they're killing the tyee fishing.

careful of the tides, some of those campgrounds on port hardy you can get out on high tide but can't come back in on low tide as the channel isn't deep enough to get back in. 


I stayed there it was a nice campground, its been a while though!

 We camped there several years back, launched and went up/across to fish Rivers Inlet. Was a fun trip.

 If you are trailering a boat, it's quite expensive to get it up there.

I’ve hear good things about Poet’s Nook near Bamfield. Brutal road out there, though. Cougar Creek Campground on Nootka Sound looks like another good option. Campbell River and Sooke both have a bunch of camping options and have a little more to do if you’ve got non-fishing family in tow or don’t want to go on the open ocean. Generally speaking I think it’s safe to say their fishing (especially bottom fish) isn’t as good, though.

Always wanted to make it north to Port Hardy or Rivers Inlet.

I used to go to Poet Nook annually.  They have a campground and a marina.  The road is brutal; it’s best to boat down from Port Alberni.  There is also a Christian men’s camp on one of the islands.  I believe it is run by North Shore Church.  Copper Island maybe, it’s been a long time so my info is pretty dated.  But the fishing could be red hot if you time it right.

I have fished Port Hardy for years, my in laws live there and my father in law is a retired fishing guide.  You have several options if you go up there from camping to lodges and motels. Usually moorage is available but launching each day isn't bad. There is a really nice launch and plenty of parking. Guided trips do awesome, the local guides are top notch. If you trailer up there bring everything to change a spare tire and a hub/bearings/seals. From Campbell River to Hardy it's 2-3 hours in no mans land.  July is prime springer fishery, september everyone quits fishing but their coho run especially the northern run is stupid good and the water is very calm. There are halibut inch restrictions.  Check out Sooke, Ucluelet and Tofino for easier trips. Nootka sound is a fishery I want to do and never been there.  If you go online and look up the guides in those areas you can figure out what they catch during what time of year.  Several of these areas are in protected waters.  Good luck!

For you guys that have fished Hardy, how would it be for a small boat? According to what I’ve read online, it looks like you can fish the bay in a car topper but the guys with bigger and faster boats go a lot further afield. Would it be worth driving all that way just to fish the bay?

In my experience, it is not worth it.

you are exactly right, Personally I would not go that far to fish the bay.  Duvall pt is right there and that is good fishing, but to cross over to the Gordon Group or Castle Pt you are crossing the strait and it can get nasty.  The best fishing now is quite a run and that is what the charters do.  That is a more open water fishery now unless you head up in September when the weather is great and there are tons of coho everywhere.  If I were you I would look at areas in the southern part of the Vancouver Island.  Sooke, Port Renfrew, Port Alberni, Ucluelet.  Crab and other opportunities are usually open.  It's nice being able to halibut and bottom fish on the same days as salmon etc.

I have a buddy that leaves his boat up there and does a week a year.  I hope it doesn't get to the point where a guy needs to go to MA7 or BC to get a good week of fishing in, but I could see that happening if the Orca issue couples with lower returns.

I used to dive up there all the time, if you hit it with the right exchange rates it can be a very affordable trip.

You have to trailer your boat down a long, crappy, gravel road to get there, but you can fish Salmon within Nootka Sound, or run outside for Salmon, Halibut, Lings and other bottomfish. I’ve never stayed at Moutcha, but have friends that have. We go to Critter Cove and stay in the cabins.

Stayed a week at Critter Cove. Supper fun place if you can get a cabin. They use to always be booked out year in and year out. All the saltwater fishing you could ever want. Easy water and the ocean.

Check out Tahsis.  Great Marina and there are a couple RV parks close by, and many rental options.  The road is really good, as far as WCVI goes.  Fishing usually requires a 10-20 mile run past the surfline if the local fish aren't in, so you will need $$ for fuel and a decent boat for offshore.
