WDFW striking when it's hot...or maybe tribal influence.  No way for opposition on this with covid restrictions.  The guides in Forks are in trouble.  The word is a push for closures from fishing floating devices AKA boats during december thru april.  During wild runs basically.....and 99 percent of the guides release to ensure the run.  We are losing folks.

now there is 50 million the state is getting for help.....commercial fisherman and others like charters....wonder what percentage will go to guys like small guides on rivers, natives, commercial crabbers and fishers etc.  I would just like to see the break down where that bundle of money will go.  If you go to WDFW news releases you can see these postings.

I like this concept. Just going for a boat ride folks. Like all the joy ride boats on lake washington during the fishing closure earlier this year. Then get out of your boat when your in a good area. Leave your boat down the bank and bank fish. 

Drift, get out, fish. Get back in repeat.

no, just means selective gear and no fishing from boats.  can still keep anything that was open before.

this is really going to put a crimp in my fishing...i mostly fish the chehalis any more, and not a lot of good bank real estate there.

The complete list of affected river and rule change.  It says "Release All Rainbow Trout".  Since Steelhead are Rainbow Trout, does this mean zero retention?

Anything over 20" is considered a steelhead.

So did they out the cart before the horse with the closure announcement or get so much pushback they now need to publicly justify their decisions.

They kept this a secret until now for a reason.  The numbers were known for months but they didn't even bother to tell the commission?

The Deschutes in Oregon has this rule of bank fishing only. Seems to work there... I won’t fish salmon and steelhead in Washington anymore. They should just close the retention of salmon across the board, commercial native and sport. At this point I believe we are witnessing the final years of salmon runs in the lower 48

Typical WDFW...let it get past the point of no return, then apply some ham fisted half measure.

It really bothers me that they’re lumping the Chehalis system and the Willapa  tributaries in with the north coastal rivers, they don’t see anywhere near the numbers of guys pounding them for wild fish that the hoh and quillayeute have.

Also, I’m sure they had these low escapement predictions months ago, why wait until it’s nearly time to fish? Kind of like last year, everything shut down in February after nearly a month of unfishable high water  by emergency closure due to a low preseason forecast.

Sad, but the Chehalis system needs this closure also. It gets pounded. The poaching of wild steelhead on every trib, above the nets, takes a huge toll on late season fish. Float the tribs and take note. Watch the plunking shacks on private lands. It is a lot of fish.

Listened to the outdoor line this morning and those guys talked a lot about that. I am disappointed in the fisheries management as a whole in this state. It’s dismal at best and now our backs are up against a wall because of mismanagement!
