DIY turret press
« on: February 26, 2021, 09:59:41 AM »
As we all know everything gun associated stuff is out of stock, backordered or just not available. I’ve had a turret press on backorder for over four months. I’m beginning to seriously doubt it will be here in the next few months. So..... I said screw it and will just make my own. I took measurements from my Hornady single stage, went online to find a style I would prefer, sat down with some measuring instruments, and started designing on CAD. I sifted through all the materials I’ve been hoarding for the last 25+ years and found some 7075 aluminum billet, some 4140 pre-hard, and my daughter unknowingly volunteered some spare bearings from her old roller blades.

I’m at the infancy stage of the project now. So, if any of the reloading gurus have any features or suggestions that may be beneficial to the design lets hear them. I’ll post pictures throughout the machining process.

The Lee looks to be out of stock on that link.

Manage to get the arms done today. Hopefully next week I can get some more machine time.

Found some machine time at the end of the day. Managed to get half the turret done. Dialed the material in to .0002” wanting to keep perpendicularity and parallelism within .0005" for the whole project.

Off to chase chrome next week. Hopefully I can nock another chunk out of the project third week of March.

It’s getting close, I’m waiting for the precision ground round bearing shaft to show up for the ram. I changed the design as the work was in process, a silicon bronze bushing will be inserted. This should increase the longevity and allow the ram to be operated dry. I was contemplating an air bushing for the ram but decided to pass.

Finally had a chance to work on it. That work thing has been getting in the way of fun. Also, had a delay in the supply chain. The shaft came in just a week ago. When I called the company asking on the delay I received the current all to common covid excuse.

After first partial assembly I had to do an engineering change. The original arms which were just a radius didn’t allow the press to sit on the table enough. The new S design moved the press an 1.5” further onto the bench.

Since the last post I managed to make the brass bushing, shafts (bearings) and alignment pin. Shaft work and a handle are up next. Unfortunately work has picked up so I’m not sure when I’ll get to work on it again.

It’s moving at a snails pace. When I get a couple of free hours it gets worked on. Since the last post I’ve added the handle which has bearings in it, why not at his point. I wasn’t liking the stack height of the shaft, case holder and dies which lead to the addition of some 1/4” shim plates at the top.

I was sent the wrong shaft. The one I order was supposed to be nitrided and soft in the middle. It would have allowed for easier machining for the case holder. But oh no, I got the shaft, they sent me a through hardened shaft which is 62-63 Rockwell. In terms of hardness? Well, you can’t even touch it with a high speed steel drill bits.

I’m going back to the drawing board to figure out a different style/custom case holder.

It’s getting close. A few more items: finishing the shaft and putting a hole in it for decapping, a case holder, and base plate, I hope?

The handle looks like it’s going to be in the way, which will be the last item to be addressed.

Since the last post work has really started to pick up which has cut into the fun time. I am nearing an end if that is possible. Since the last post I’ve finished the shaft and made the case holders.

The original handle was going to be an issue so a quick an easy modification was in order. Cut, grind and weld.

Currently the press is finished and full functioning. I’ve decapped a 100 rounds and did some shoulder bumping just for testing purpopses.

The only hold up at this point is with the die set. It’s a Redding competition bushing neck sizing die which I really like.  At the time of purchase I didn’t realize a neck bushing set would be required. I’m not real hot on the idea of buying the set Redding offers so I decided to make my own. Might as well make some sizing buttons too. The Material is D2 which will get heat treated. It’s a pretty cool material, during the heat treat process it grows micro carbides. When finished and polished it will be slick as glass.
