Westside muzzy bull
« on: October 11, 2024, 11:52:30 AM »
Well home and semi recovered.  Did a backcountry hunt with my hunting buddy. Hiked in about 5-6 miles with plans on staying 5-7 days of the muzzy season.  First 2-3 days bulls were talking and we almost closed the deal on a bull with some cow calling but the lead cow winded us and blew out of there with the herd.  I think day 4 I did a bunch of still hunting and cow calling every 200 yards.  After 50 failed attempts I called from another spot.  About 20 seconds goes by and a cow popped out in front of me at about 10 yards.  She looks my direction and books out of there.  Thought that there has to be a bull somewhere close.  About 20 seconds later a bull walks into my shooting lane and BOOM!  Bull takes off.  Call the hunting buddy on the radio and let him know I probably shot a bull.  We waited an hour and started tracking.  Tiny specs of blood immediately but it had me worried. We made the initial mistake of following hoof prints. After another 10 yards of tracking my buddy looks over and says there he is about 10 yards away.  We were on a cow's track my mistake.  Anyway, got on Inreach to get an outfitter to pack this bull out for us.  They (Chinook Outfitter's) said be there tomorrow.  Got to cutting and packed it to the nearest trail and hung the meat.  Met them them next day around 12.  Great group of people.  They loaded it up told us where to pick it up when we were done.  They had it in coolers with ice when we got there a day or two later.  Anyways, good to be home and sleep in a bed.  Those were long hikes in and out.

Thank you for sharing this!  Way to keep at the calling game, and bonus that you could get an outfitter in there for the pack out!  Sounds like those folks were really professional and took good care of your game.

Congratulations!
You got that baby the old fashioned way you earned that one!

Great story, great looking country, would love to do a hunt like that.
It's never to late to be what you could have been
