i have taken some pretty nice deer so these days trying to go for older mature deer this deer is around 3yrs old and would of made a great buck in two years.hes 17.5"inside spread.the land i hunt is private CRP fields.i found some nice tracks heading to a eyebrow with a couple trees in it and when i got there i saw rubs and scrapes so i hunkered down and started to rattle and grunt but the wind was so hard that i didnt think he would here it if he was upwind so i followed his trail to another big brow and started sneaking slow through the trees and a 1x2 caught me at 20 yds! i froze hit the grunt tube a few times and that little guy got all puffed up! he put his head down and started walking at me all stiff legged and hair up! the wind was probably 30mph in my face and this little guy came in to 15' of me started curling his lip at me and circling me to get down wind.i started to get worried that he wouldnt get down wind before we were face to face! ha. he had made about all the way around me and as soon as he caught wind his eyes doubled and he was out of there!that was pretty cool.while i was screwing around with this buck the big deer had heard the grunts and as i walked another 10ft he was coming out of the thicket at about 200yds.i dropped the pack and belly stalked about 40yds to a little pine and got setup.the buck had come about 30yds closer but stayed there because he had a doe with him.i used a branch to steady the gun and had only a front shoulder shot so i took it . the wind carried the bullet about 4"s to the left and drilled his neck and dropped him in his tracks.it was really a great hunt.

"i thought he was a little bigger or i would of passed him "

Is that like when a woman says "Do I look fat?" and they just really want you to say, no dear, you look great....

There are lots of guys, and gals, that would love to shoot a little one like that.   ;)

Nice deer BTW.

That is what I thought. I've hunted an area just west of Ewan the last couple years.
We've done pretty well but have never seen a whitetail there.

It's private. Last year we saw tons of deer opening weekend and got a couple of bucks.
This year we couldn't go until the second weekend. I shot my biggest buck on friday
but that was the only legal buck that we saw all weekend. The guys that were there
the weekend before us thought It would be a good idea to ride atv's around. :bash:
Its a great spot with rock creek runnin right thru it so hopefully we can go back.

Great bucks.  I love that country.....spent most of my life running around there chasing all types of game.  We still have some ground down there.  I know most of that country like that back of my hand.  If I haven't hunted it, I've stretched wire across it  :chuckle:.  We used to have really good mule deer (1994 - 2000), but it has really dropped off.  We killed a bunch of nice 24"-29" bucks during this time.

The hunting was way better before the state and BLM started buying up Rock Creek.  Used to be no-one down there - now it's a madhouse.  I have switched to hunting whitetails/muleys in a completely different area because of this.   I have access to some of the best private down there, but the big bucks are just too few and far between.   There are still a lot of deer and a lot of bucks just nothing big.  Looks like you are finding some good whiteys.  Good job!

i agree in 2000 we saw so many nice deer muley and whitetail.i dont shoot any mule deer out of the private land i hunt anymore because of low numbers but ill take mature whitetail bucks.what really pisses me off is when i see 8 guys piled in a truck driving through the fields chasing the deer down! half of them dont even have permission they ust fly throught the eyebrows and shoot whatever runs out. i have a couple buddies who used to work for escure's when they were running sheep through revere some pretty awesome stories about the good old days.im sure you know alot of the guys i know if you wor

It's a small world down there.....I am sure that I know them/of them.  Sent you a PM.  Agree with 2000 as the last good year.  We killed a 24"er in Escure's and I killed a 29"er real close  ;)
