Burned
« on: November 17, 2010, 07:02:28 PM »
Co-worker was whining he could not get into birds with his dog. Took him to one of my areas for quail. Maybe a 80 acre always birds there but cannot take a lot of pressure.  (I 'll only take a few birds from the covey and let the rest go as they receive a lot of pressure from the hawks owls and coyotes too). I tell him as a favor for taking him out there to keep it a secret. He says sure no problem. No one ever hunts this area and is kind of a pain to access. We go hunting get into a lot of birds and he's happy.

The past few times I have been out there no birds. Finding lots of spent shells all over the area. Well am hunting and see this guy off in the distance with a couple of other guys jumping birds shooting jumping them again and shooting till no quail are left. I leave the area because too many hunters. I find out later it was the co-worker I took to my secret place  and has been bringing about 6-8 other guys to this area too.

I know the feeling.  Thats why I don't take anyone anywhere, or tell anyone anything.
I would rather be a conservative nut job, than a liberal with no nuts, and no job!

I used to enjoy sharing info and taking guys with little experience or  luck hunting and fishing. And i used to think there was unwritten code among sportsmen. I have had guys take me to their secret fishing and hunting areas. Had a few nice guys on here share priviliged info. I would never even consider taking someone else to these areas.

Have to be more careful in the future

When I was a kid my dad and I went hunting with his "friend". This was a really great spot that had always treated us well. We hunted all day and got nothing. Dad was telling the friend how sorry he was that we didn't get any birds. They friend said "I know, I don't understand either. Me and a couple of friends all got limits here yesterday."  :dunno:  My dad absolutely came unglued. For one why didn't the friend mention it so we could go somewhere else, and for 2 why was he hunting a property that he was only allowed to hunt with my dad. Some guys just don't get the "code"

If you're taking someone to a honey hole, blindfold them and take an alternate route there so they can enjoy the day but don't know  how to get there

I haven't been hunting long enough to have any secret spots.  But I am a steelhead flyfisherman, so I know of what you speak.  I have three or four friends that I will take to almost any "secret" pool I fish. They will in turn do the same.  That said we all know the dangers and respect the effort it takes to find and learn how to fish a given piece of water.  That said fish come and go, birds don't.  Sorry to hear that you work with an ass hat.  Two approaches I would consider

1) make sure that he and the others knows he screwed you
2) this one isn't legal

before busting him, offer to drive and have him show you one of his secret spots, or maybe a couple. no respect.
