.284 win
« on: July 27, 2011, 09:46:53 AM »
So I felt like starting a multi-page debate that probably has no merit so I decided this would be a good topic.
 :chuckle:

I have an opportunity to pick up a .284 win barrel for my T/C Encore. I already have a .280 barrel for it. I don't necessarily mind having lots of barrels, but is there anything that the .284 has that the .280 doesn't?  Just for the sake of discussion, action length has no bearing with an Encore so the long action/short action debate is null unless you guys really want to debate that for the bolt action crowd. I'm not against that.

I'm not a reloader.
(for the sake of discussion)

If it were a really good deal then why not. If just an average deal I don't see the need if you already own a .280. If you want a step up to .284 from the .280 I would go with a 7mm RM. :twocents:

Cant hurt, some guys are really into .284's. I have a friend that shoots on, ammo seems to be the biggest set back, hard to find at times. If you have the cash, why not! Buy it!

Absolutely no need for a 284 if you have a 280. Especially with you not being a handloader, the 284 ammo would be unnecessarily expensive. I'm sure you have other things to spend your money on.   :dunno:

In a single shot, there is no advantage to having a .284 Win over the .280 Rem.  In a bolt gun, you could argue that the short action 284 may be better..........but a single shot, nope.

(This reminds me..........I really need to try selling my .284 Win).
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

I had a 7 rem mag heavy barrel for it too but I unloaded it in favor of my 300 win mag barrel. I'd honestly have a hard time not using the 300wm barrel for everything big game in this state. The standard rifle contour barrels are very lightweight and make for a nice compact rig even with the barrels being 26" so for a backpack gun I'd leave the 300wm heavy barrel at home probably but thats about it.

Yes, yes I do.

As it sits right now, if I run out of ammo at the end of the world, the zombies have taken their fair share of lead and I'd have put up a good fight.

Looking at ammo prices I wouldn't even think about it unless you reload. Double the price of .280 bullets with a lot less to choose from and very similar ballistics.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Yes it is...apparently there may be such a thing as too many different calibers. I told the guy I'd trade if he wanted to work out a deal but I did not want to purchase it from him. I have some iron to move if he's interested. We'll see.

Factory ammo was made for the win88,100 models. So that is what you get for factoy ammo.

 :yeah:
And the bullets are seated fairly deep to fit in the detachable mag for the model 100.  A reloader could get a lot more performance out of it for a single shot.
