a couple of firsts, and a heck of a learning curve to overcome!

Work was cancelled today due to the snow, and I decided to head out to a local area that has had dogs and cats being killed by yotes.  I arrived with my 12gauge mossberg with 00 buck loads and a modifed choke.  I walked to the back of the 5 acre pasture which borders a huge section of timber and got ready for my first stand.  After I set up my rabbit decoy and foxpro spitfire I started to climb the tree stand.  As I was just getting near the top a doe goes flying by with two large coyotes on her tail.  They stopped some time later and came trotting past me (in rifle range ) I let out a few rabbit in distress calls and they stopped dead in there tracks.  But that was it, they were hung up at about 100 yards, and wouldnt budge.  I then switched it up to a challange, and they then just trotted off.  Out of desperation I hit the coyote in distres.  Boy that was the ticket, they came flying back to the sound!  The female hung up at the pastures edge but the male kept coming.  He got within a few feetof the stand and as I was going for the shot, the owners horse came charging and scared the yote so my broad side trotting shot oppurtinuty turned into a running broad side shot.  I hit him and he smacked the ground, got up and barely avoided getting trampled by the horse.  As he was running, there was plent of spray, and Im pretty sure I hit a artery.  He eneded up crawling into a huge section of blackberries and dying in there   I learned today that semi urban coyotes do not hunt the wind like there country cousins do, and that to stable the horse the next time I hunt over there.   Sorry for the lousy pic, my camera would not take pictures in the bright snow, and I was left with my track cellphone.

Seth, I have a spot north of Oak Harbor that I may call you for some company.  I have permission from one of the owners but need to chat with other family that lives next door.  I can bring my slug gun w/scope to get those 100 yarders.  Probably won't be until March though so keep practicing and figuring them out.

  I will be at it again in a few weeks.  Hopefully next time I can actually film it.

C27 Coy Pup Dist 2 as my foxpro software reads.  Not sure how often this works, but with yotes that have been eating yapper dogs it worked great.
